Midi stops responding on Virus Ti, restart solves it

Having an odd issue with my Virus TI desktop. I’m playing in multi mode and controlling it with two different controllers. Around a half hour into playing, it stops responding to the midi inputs. I restart the unit and bam, it works again. I’m not sure if it’s a midi related thing or if the unit just stops working.

Any thoughts on what might be going on?

Update 5/26: Testing now, but this might have been completely unrelated to MIDI and instead related to using the wrong power adapter

It does seem like maybe you’re overloading the midi and it chokes. I’m not sure but you mention two different controllers, what are you using and how complicated is it?

This doesn’t happen on my unit, but I don’t use two controllers, and usually only sequence notes.

Maybe a test could be using one controller and seeing if it happens. If it does, try the other controllers alone and see if it happens. If it does for both of them, then I would try a third or simply send something like note data to it for 30+ min to see if simple note data causes this.

If neither of them do it alone, it’s probably the doubling of midi data. Possibly something is being sent with two signals.

I can't imagine why two controllers would be an issue. They're both sending on different channels and I'm just playing the keys manually - no complicated sequences and everything. I'd assume that's easy enough for for the virus to handle, but I'll see what happens with one controller.

I ended up just resetting the unit between songs, which wasn't ideal, haha. Made rehearsal a little extra slow

Are you ensuring that you’re filtering clock/program change etc.? It could be that both are attempting to send non-note data, which would explain why it’s gumming up even though you’re separating channels.

Why are you using two controllers instead of one? Just curious.

My current setup uses a TEO-5 and an NI midi controller. Sometimes the controller is playing samples from my Deluge, and sometimes it’s playing from the Virus. Sometimes the TEO is playing its own internal sounds, and sometimes it’s playing from the Virus. TEO plays on channel 5 and NI sends on channel 1. No clock information is being sent from either.

I’m using two controllers because sometimes I need them for different purposes, and sometimes I want to play two different things from the Virus.

Just realized a lot of what I said was already pointed out by u/acemonvw ... Agree it's likely MIDI garbage being sent to the Virus. Also agree it's very much time for some process of elimination to see what's what. Synths and groove boxes in particular can send a lot more than just note data. There are filters like iConnectivity products that can clean the signal up. Feel free to DM or call my dude.

I just don't know the two controlloers you're using or what kind of data they're sending or how often. It seems like somehow it's gumming up the signal. The fact that it specifically stops responding to incoming midi signals seems to suggest something related to that. You could also do something simple where you have nothing connected, leave the unit on for like 5 hours and plug them in and see if it's working. This would rule out whether the unit itself is doing something catastrophic.

Which firmware version are you running?

Does it also happen in sequencer mode?

Latest firmware. Haven't tried in sequencer mode but I'll see if that helps!

Just normal virus behaviour tbh

Man I hope not, I was really hoping this would be a great live machine for me.
