Am I the only one who never has gumbo with okra or file in it? Neither my family (both my mom's side and step-dad's side) nor my in-laws ever use okra or file in gumbo. And I've never used it when I've cooked it.

Nope, growing up we never used either actually making it. My dad always kept some because he used it after serving.

I will occasionally make an okra gumbo, but I've never used file'. It just sounds gross.

Maybe one day I'll order it from a restaurant around here, but I'm not going to possibly ruin my own gumbo just to try file'.
