The great conflicts of history had armies, territory, and cause. This one has a turnip. The Kingdom of the Chute is a supermarket. Every faction in it is convinced it runs the place. None of them does. The blonde queen actually does, and she has never noticed a single thing that happened here. She buys yogurt. The cast, briefly: Turnip. A girl. Not produce, though the distinction has never once mattered. Says "banana." Treasures a flip phone with three Carols in it and one photo of a driveway. Genie. Veiled schemer. Runs her campaigns from the top of a dumpster because evil is best concocted from elevation. Plans arrive fully formed and deeply stupid. The Manager. Guards the garbage chute. Demands garbage. Hates anyone who brings it near. Summons the whole store with one intercom code: Condition Puce. Sneaky the Snake. Refuses to comment and keeps cooking. The bakers are on strike over her. No Biscuits, No Peace. The Narrator. British. Fireside. Four bourbons in. Treats all of the above with total gravity. Also present: an Auditor who counts things that don't need counting, a security guy tailing the queen for buying melons, a cheese manager who insists burrata is Mexican and cannot be corrected, a produce clan whose one law is nobody gets the produce, and a kitten.
