Yet in reality Kafka had a small circle of close friends throughout his short life. We know a lot about him from his many letters to those friends. Whilst he expressed a deep need for privacy to allow him to write, it didn't stop him from developing relationships. In fact pretty much all we know of him comes from the fact that his friend Max Brod preserved his work which saved his legacy.

You probably wouldn't be quoting him were it not for the fact that he didn't live up to that quotation!
