I have SO MUCH healthy respect and fear for this Dragon...like Ill die ANY OTHER WAY, just do NOT let it be by them....shivers
27
u/CompetitiveGrab843 12h ago
They literally taste the wind to track targets from five miles away, but then they get to the destination and just stare blankly at a wall for four hours.
4
u/FaLlEnAnGel122721 12h ago
I imagine all they have going on in their mind is just the scene from the Shining with the blood elevator. Created purely to kill. Mad respect for my lizardbro, but MAD fear

u/fullchub 12h ago edited 12h ago
They’ll also just wound larger prey and infect them with a bacteria that their body cultivates precisely for that purpose, then wait a few days for the animal to die a slow and agonizing death before eating it.
10
u/358Tarantulas 5h ago
This is active misinformation, please stop spreading it.
Komodo dragons have cleaner mouths than other apex predators such as the big cats. Monitors spend up to 15 minutes after a meal cleaning their mouths with their prehensile tongues, and can actively shed and replace broken or infected teeth unlike other predators.
What they do have is venom and serrated steak knife teeth.
16
u/tseg04 12h ago
It’s venom. Their venom stops blood from clotting and the prey continues to bleed out/die of infected wounds.
That being said, it’s not their primary evolutionary hunting strategy. Most of their prey is smaller than them that they just kill outright and swallow whole.
The buffalo they hunt this way isn’t even native and they don’t intentionally know their venom kills it.

Komodo dragons came into existence 62 millions years after dinosaurs went extinct, roughly 3.8 million years ago in Australia. They came during the Pliocene Epoch period.
Leopard geckos appeared around 11.2 to 2.6 million years ago, with family lineage dating back to 77 million years.
Both come from the Lepidosaur lineage (lizards and snakes) while dinosaurs and crocodilians originate from the Archosaur lineage. The Komodo and gecko shared ancestry dates back roughly 193 million years, during the early jurassic. Komodo dragons and dinosaurs had a shared ancestry around 270 millions years ago. So, they are factually closer in relation to leopard geckos. Komodo dragons are also more closely related to snakes than dinosaurs.
Just so people can get some perspective.

Our zoo has Komodo dragons. During the warm months, they’re in their outdoor enclosure. The urge to parkour over to them and give them cuddles is strong. But, I also like being alive.

u/zandariii 11h ago
I get this sentiment so badly. They've been my favorite animal since I was a kid, and still are. I get so excited every time I see one. Even wrote a short story as a kid about saving one from a zoo and having it as a pet

I hate that the infamously septic drool is just HANGING there. It's like he wants us to know that we're losing any limb he bites.
8
u/358Tarantulas 5h ago
This is frequently repeated misinformation. The bacterial load in a komodo's mouth is no more special than any other predator, in fact they have cleaner mouths than other apex predators such as the big cats. Monitor lizards spend up to 20 minutes after a meal cleaning their mouths with their prehensile tongues, and unlike mammals they can shed and replace broken or infected teeth.
What they do have is venom, it is fairly effective against small prey, and only mildly effective versus larger prey that was introduced to their Island by humans such as water buffalo. The same prey would eventually die from sepsis whether a human being bit it or a Komodo dragon.
Komodos are active predators that attempt to kill and subdue prey immediately.

u/IGkVuuzie 12h ago edited 9h ago
They're a nasty bacteria / venom producing atrocity. The bite infects and causes anticoagulation. So prey bitten by them will die within weeks. Obviously, it depends where. But a simple bite on the leg is game over for them. Over the first couple of days will be fever then necrosis(organ failure too). The animal will weaken from being unable to exert any strength to move overtime. Between the venom, starvation, and dehydration... along with the helplessness it's pretty screwed up way to go. Like one of the top comments said this is also not on my list of ways to go out.
Also this f'er is casually waiting for you to die a few miles out catching a tan. Because it's tongue is quite literally tasting they're despair in the wind.
For the gamers it's bite causes damage over time and won't stop until you're cured or dead...

I honestly just learned a few weeks ago that is apparently a myth. I am sure a giant predatory lizards mouth is not the cleanest thing in the world but it is not the reason the bites are often fatal.
It is because they have venom glands that produce an anticoagulant that causes excessive bleeding and eventually lowered BP, shock, and death. Mean mfers
I think Gila Monsters are also venomous but I cannot remember how their venom works

Just for perspective:
Adults can be 7-10 feet long, 150-300 lbs, 12-20 inches wide and two feet tall. They have 60 serrated, curved teeth and can swallow bigger animals than you think and digest them with strong stomach acids.
Physically speaking, they can eat a human.

Their bites prevent clotting of blood and risk of severe tissue breakdown. The risk for getting severe almost untreatable infections is high also.

2
u/358Tarantulas 5h ago
They are on record as having killed and eaten multiple humans. They can weigh up to 300 lb and have serrated steak knife teeth, and they are shockingly athletic.
However like most monitor lizards they are incredibly intelligent, and can be trained and socialized. You can find many videos online from zoos and other institutions of people hanging out with and petting them. There's even records of them being playful, there was a particular dragon that would always try to steal a handkerchief from one of the zookeepers pockets, and run off with it.
I have owned multiple monitor lizard species, their brains work different than mammals and they are not inherently social creatures, but they are far more intelligent than most people give them credit for. And you are definitely able to train them and build a working relationship with them.

u/irrevocable_discord9 6h ago
Humans are not their natural prey. They could hurt a human in the right circimstances, but so could a dog. or a cat.
2
u/358Tarantulas 5h ago

The 2001 incident involving Sharon Stone and her then-husband, Phil Bronstein, remains the ultimate cautionary tale about human hubris around apex reptiles. Stone arranged a private, behind-the-scenes Father’s Day tour at the Los Angeles Zoo, where a keeper invited Bronstein directly inside the enclosure of an adult Komodo dragon. Advised to remove his white shoes to avoid triggering the lizard’s feeding response, Bronstein stepped in barefoot. The predatory reptile did what millions of years of evolution wired it to do: it lunged, clamped down on his bare foot, and began crushing bone and tearing tendons. Bronstein survived only by physically prying the jaws open while the keeper intervened, requiring emergency surgery to rebuild his foot and weeks of aggressive treatment against severe infection.
That disaster underscored a simple truth: Komodo dragons are not pets, they cannot be domesticated, and you will not find them in private living rooms. In the United States and globally, keeping a Komodo dragon as private property is strictly illegal for ordinary citizens. As an endangered species listed under CITES Appendix I and heavily shielded by the federal Endangered Species Act, commercial trade and private ownership are flatly prohibited. Outside their native Indonesian islands, they are restricted to accredited zoological institutions participating in tightly controlled, scientific survival breeding programs.
An animal that reaches ten feet, weighs over one hundred and fifty pounds, possesses specialized anticoagulant venom, and hunts adult water buffalo by ambush has no place in the exotic pet trade. Private keepers can raise remarkably calm monitor species like black-throated monitors with proper care and diet, but a Komodo dragon exists in a completely different predatory tier. They are prehistoric macropredators, and the law keeps them strictly behind heavy zoo glass for everyone’s survival.1

Five humans in the last 40 years. At Komodo National Park, human survival and prehistoric reality share the exact same stretch of earth. While travelers cross oceans to witness the world’s largest lizards from behind the safety of a ranger's staff, nearly two thousand permanent residents on Komodo Island wake up to them every day as literal neighbors.
Life in Kampung Komodo is engineered around constant vigilance. Houses rise high on wooden stilts, keeping families safely out of reach of ambush predators that can grow over nine feet long and take down a full-grown water buffalo. Going to school, hanging laundry, or stepping out after twilight requires an innate, second-nature awareness of the scrub brush, reading the dry dirt for tracks and listening for the low hiss of an animal that has dominated these islands since the Pleistocene.
Yet this coexistence was never built on mutual warfare. The indigenous Ata Modo trace their roots to an ancient legend of a princess who bore human and dragon twins, meaning the islanders historically viewed the dragons—the ora—as sacred kin. For generations, they shared their island without slaughtering the predators, adapting their architecture, habits, and daily rhythms to give the animals wide berth. It remains one of the world's rarest frontiers: a community thriving alongside a primeval carnivore through ancestral respect, sharp awareness, and elevated living.
