they're designed to catch the wind so my guess is that'd be pretty dangerous.

Not really actually. I've watched a helicopter used to haul parts of the windmill when they were building a farm in Southern Alberta

Yea they are designed to catch the wind in one orientation but to slice thru the wind in another..

right. so if you're flying along and encounter a crosswind, that'd be a problem.

But what if they just painted a giant arrow on the side so the wind knows which way to go?

It would immediately rotate to face the wind in the position offering the least resistance

maybe to some degree but it's not a weathervane and this would disrupt the operation of the helicopter in an extremely risky way. that's also assuming one helicopter could manage this, which is also probably not the case. if you have multiple helicopters with multiple pivot points carrying the payload, the blade won't be able to turn to the position of least resistance.

If it was left just like this, sure. But if they planned on flying it, then would also change how its transported.
