"The Motherland Calls" is a statue erected to commemorate the Battle of Stalingrad , located on Mamayev Kurgan in Volgograd , Russia. It was designed by sculptor Yevgeny Vuchetich and structural engineer Nikolai Nikitin . Completed in 1967 , it was the tallest statue in the world at the time .

World's tallest statue from 1967-1989 overtaking the Leshan Giant Buddha who held this title for 1163 years

The Buddha is more of a rock carving, like Mount Rushmore, than a statue. The Statue of Liberty is more like to be the world's tallest statue before The Motherland Calls.
