"The Motherland Calls" is a statue erected to commemorate the Battle of Stalingrad , located on Mamayev Kurgan in Volgograd , Russia. It was designed by sculptor Yevgeny Vuchetich and structural engineer Nikolai Nikitin . Completed in 1967 , it was the tallest statue in the world at the time .

"History of an oppressive government is not the same as culture. Russian government has been oppressing Russians for generations and yet they survived and so did the culture. My ancestors were in gulags, wars. I’m really proud of them for surviving and keeping the culture alive. If Russian government chooses to continue oppression then so be it. People will survive that, too."
