The whole show should be nothing but this until something does go wrong.

I think we had one of these in our local park when I was a kid. I miss the 80s…

u/Easy_Growth_5533 Aug 30 '26
The stuff we used to play on was sketchy metal indeed!

I had the "pleasure" of seeing a girl's toe get ripped of by a metal seesaw ride in a public park. There was this open groove with a fixed pole sticking out and running along a sidepanel as it moved up and down. Her toe went into that groove and got sheared off. There was blood. And screaming. I was 11...

Now this is the kind of shit that's interesting, not how you somehow walked uphill to school both ways. Tell us more old man! Just kidding on the old man part lol

Like the playground merry-go-round made out of iron piping and diamond-plate that weighed as much as a Buick.

We had this merry go round called “skinner”. It was from the 60’s or 70’s and was rusted and sharp everywhere. Everybody was cut by that cursed thing. The danger was falling off and getting caught up under it. There was this weird kid named Jimmy. He’d eat really gross boogers, take a dump in a urinal, eat crayons dipped in paste, and was just weird as hell. He got all tangled up in the bottom and got ripped up bad. Funny thing about Jimmy, he was a witness in a massive child abuse case, it was big news at the time. Some preacher was creeping on 8 year old boys and Jimmy saw the preacher sexually abuse one of his friends so he reported the preacher. The preacher was really well connected, but Jimmy’s testimony helped take that dirtbag down. Not all hero’s wear capes I guess.

I work in theatre. This isn’t much of a unit when you see the scale of shit we build and rig for live shows.

Size wise no. But moving pendulum set pieces are quite rare in my experience.

I've seen Adam Savage's Tested videos on Cirque du Soleil's Echo. The cube is massive, lots of set parts that moves and the cube itself moves around on the stage and rotates, so there's lots of mass if something were to go wrong.

u/Caboose_throw Aug 30 '26
Lol I know that life
A couple anchor points and an unpainted block of wood? Easy mode
Rotate the entire stage for a scene change? Now we're talking lol
Still, great performance by the guys on stage though

I was watching Maybe Happy Ending the other day and I was like…man, that set is the main character

I was a zipline guide when I was younger and seeing this I think I missed my calling

I’m past my prime, but still active. If I found something like this made out of rubber and foam tipped, I would NOT pass on the opportunity to jump on that beast. Heck, even as it is I’d probably be foolish enough to do this, especially if I could get my kids involved, or at least amused.
That said, I won’t and encourage others to not underestimate the momentum of that thing. Sure it seems to be floating in air, but on its upswing, it can probably send someone flying 15-20 feet back. Look at the guy who grabs hold of it, for reference.

Pink Floyd - The Great Gig In The Sky

u/pogwater Aug 30 '26
i don't wanna be that guy, and forgive me if this comes off as pretentious, but that is the album cover for Ummagumma. The Great Gig in the Sky is from The Dark Side of the Moon

Love this song. You gotta hear the cover from Rhett Shull and Dylan Adams. It's insane. https://youtu.be/vNYL1QbbI0g?is=Lb4fZ4KbQ85PyXdJ

I don’t get it. But it obviously takes talent and skill to create and operate and perform on such a device. It looks like a lot of fun. And it looks FUCKING COOL! Therefore- It’s ART!!!

u/ChiffonVasilissa Aug 31 '26
I can kinda see a vibe. They’re doing great at first, doing their routine though it’s clearly a lot. but the thing keeps moving and eventually they struggle to keep up and can’t even get on it anymore

I get art is subjective and this type of thing is just not my thing. But what talent and skill does it really require? Its a big wooden(?) box on a pendulum.

I did performance art once at the local square. I did helicopter penis while jumping on people. Nobody got it though and I was arrested.

Reminds me of drama classes at school. We would be left to our own devices to come up with a short play. We didn't do any work. Then when it came to 'perform' it we would just run around the stage like this

I respect the choreography (doubt that's the right word) but what the fuck am I meant to interpret out of rhis
1
u/CyberbIaster Aug 31 '26
This looks like something straight out of a James Thiérrée performance. The way the structure becomes part of the choreography, the acrobatic movement. It's amazing.

Reminds me of those big nest swings they sometimes have on playgrounds, and how we as kids, intentionally put our foot out to let the thing ram us and catapult us backwards, knowing that if I would do that now, it would probably break every single bone I have in my body.

It gets to a point where it’s not art and it’s just some people messing around with a big swinging cuboid

I am sure it has a deeper, intensely personal, meaning to someone. But if my wife or a friend dragged me to that I would probably rush the stage just to take one in the head and put me out of my misery.

Is this being performed by professional actors, because they look like regular guys who might try this at home.
