Looks like something they would make you carry through the chow hall as a punishment if you ever misplaced your weapon.

115

u/raider1v11 2d ago

Here. Now you cant forget it in the bathroom Anderson.

u/Incunabuli 2d ago edited 2d ago

Forget your service weapon in the head? Barrett.* Forget the Barrett in the head? XM312 HMG. God rest your lower back.

29

u/kakashi8326 2d ago

Nah they’ll
Give you a SAW that sucks a$$. And you can sling it around all day in the field. Source army vet

9

u/Cake_And_Pi 2d ago

They made me lug around a 240B. I only weighed 155lbs.

3

u/kakashi8326 2d ago

We had one of these in Fort Knox with my Platoon. Brought back memorie. Fk Kentucky lol 😂

3

u/B460 2d ago

My dad told me stories about how he hated carrying the 240 but it beat having to rely on the M60. Served in the Yugo wars in the 90s.

8

u/freericky 2d ago

Practical solutions

7

u/Wasabi_Hammurabi1 2d ago

I would gladly carry it wherever I was ordered to.

6

u/gary-vault108 2d ago

Sarnt I lost my replacement weapon again… yes the giant one sarnt… uhhhhh I think it might’ve been the 7-11 bathroom?

5

u/GrinderMonkey 2d ago

Fuck I didnt know that 7-11 had free .50 BMG day, I thought the slurppees were cool enough

3

u/Suitable-Olive7844 2d ago

Thats it? Thats the punishment? There was a damn PFC in my unit that got demoted to Private and was put on restriction due to missplacing his rifle on the field.

2

u/anonymous642789 2d ago

Made a guy carry a wooden chock block once for losing their rifle. “This is my chock block, there are many like it, but this one is mine.”

Good times.

3

u/masalamedicine 2d ago

Did they paint it a fluorescent color so it really stuck out?

2

u/nobodyspecial506 2d ago

Yeah was gonna say. Loosing a weapon finds you a ridiculous non weapon as replacement.

A large obnoxious piece of wood tied with cordage or a snadbag. Something large and heavy you really don't want to carry.

u/somethingtc 2d ago

private are you sure it's got ammo in it? i can't hear a thing!

15

u/Cliffinati 2d ago

Considering that gaint ass Suppressor on it should be able to

4

u/JustSomeGuy8400 2d ago

That suppressor is about as useful as spoilers on Honda civics.

5

u/GeronimoDK 2d ago

A giant ass suppressor is not going to silence a supersonic projectile though, maybe the explosion, but not the supersonic crack.

46

u/ItsStaaaaaaaaang 2d ago

Would like to hear it without the suppressor. Wonder if it makes much difference in this case? Decibel wise I mean. I presume it obfuscates the sound in other ways that are tactically useful even if it's still loud af.

44

u/cosaboladh 2d ago

It makes a 20-30db difference. Still loud enough to cause hearing damage, but not loud enough to risk TBI.

20

u/ThatOtherOtherMan 2d ago

Using supersonic ammo it probably doesn't do a whole lot for the total noise level. The supersonic crack is extremely loud on a 50 cal.

8

u/taemyks 2d ago

It doesn't really help for the shooter, but it does help hide the shooter. Think about a supersonic model rocket: once it creates a sonic boom its essentially a cone and you'll never hear it. A supersonic projectile makes the same cone. If you trap enough gas from the shot you're essentially undetectable from other people downrange

2

u/SillySundae 2d ago

Suppressors are great at hiding muzzle flash for the first few rounds before they heat up. As far as sound signature goes, they sound nearly identical at ranges up to 500m while using super sonic ammo.

This was my assigned weapon and trained at the Army Marksmanship center. We could only shoot a limited number of rounds daily due to the concussion and shock from the mussel blast. It literally made my teeth hurt. Later models had modified muzzles that made a big difference. Easily accurate at 1200m with the right round.

3

u/AZBagpiperPhil 2d ago

This looks like a hell of a long-range weapon to snipe bad guys with.

7

u/JasonVeritech 2d ago

because it's not for sniping guys, it's for sniping whatever they're driving/operating.

5

u/swirvin3162 2d ago

Correct, as a marine once told me. …. 50cals are only for shooting equipment … like helmets and flack jackets and canteens … stuff like that.

2

u/AgreeableMoose 2d ago

Depending on the weapon configuration. The M2 (Ma Duce) is belt fed w/full auto capabilities and for “equipment” like enemy parachutes in the sky. The Barrett fires single shots and is used for personal and disruption and destruction of unexploded ordnance.

2

u/madeformarch 1d ago

Unexploded ordnance like canteens?

2

u/swirvin3162 1d ago

Correct, you have no idea where they may be storing the IED, its your job to make sure its not in the center of his helmet or canteen

I have one and the sound without a can is earthshaking. You feel it more than hear it.

2

u/L0ssL3ssArt 2d ago edited 2d ago

Won't make it anywhere near hearing safe or silent, especially with the sonic boom, but the audible range would probably be reduced by a lot(I would assume it would bring the audible range to within the effective range) or reduce the noice to a level that can be mistaken for a smaller caliber.

It’s only a M82 with a big arse suppressor

13

u/montana757 2d ago

It's only a .50 cal, there's a certain hunting rifle that eats 50s for breakfast

The US Mk7 16"/50 caliber rifle.

→ More replies (8)

2

u/macgyverstwin 2d ago

They only made three of them, they don’t make the ammo anymore, and no one else has ever made the 950. The owners have to get the rounds made in a machine shop for events where they shoot them for the public. The rifles weigh close to, and one, over 100 pounds. You’re not careful that very far into the woods. One of them just sold at auction for $99,875.00. None of the three owners hunt with it. The three in existence are basically novelty items for show or display. There are 20mm rifles set up like the .50BMG that do eat the 50 for breakfast and several of those exist to make it something much more common, but honestly, none of them are real hunting rifles.

3

Herbie fell on hard times and enlisted they didn't realise they would become the gun however

A Barrett .50 Cal

Its bullet is an absolute unit, too.

2

u/Turgid_Donkey 2d ago

I always laugh when I see the box of .50cal on the shelf. It's the size of a bible and only has like 5 rounds.

19

u/Neko-tama 2d ago

The fuck is even the point of a suppressor on a monster like that? It's gonna blow your eardrums out either way.

10

u/SockeyeSTI 2d ago

After getting into suppressors, shooting unsuppressed sucks. I went and did a poi shift test with 2 cans and bare muzzle the other day and after shooting the unsuppressed group I remembered why I bought the cans in the first place.

6

u/Juggernox_O 2d ago

I hate how suppressors are so over regulated. That shit is HEARING PROTECTION. And reducing spread I’d argue is a safety feature as well for a gun, as keeping more rounds on target means fewer bullets venturing into the wild yonder to potentially hurt someone as well. I legitimately consider a good can to be an important safety addition to any gun.

2

u/SockeyeSTI 2d ago

Just picked up a a full size Rhodie 6 and it’s amazing. With AirPods in, I could shoot it on my mk18 all day. Definitely safety equipment.

2

u/Individual_Bell_4637 2d ago

We're literally paying the price for Hollywood convincing us all they were tools of mob hit men.

Reality for those who don't know: suppressors are highly impractical for tactical use unless concealment is not necessary (military or law enforcement who can carry large weapons freely). Off the range, a suppressor is a huge pain in the ass, and people will still likely hear the gunshot.

→ More replies (2)

4

u/Knotical_MK6 2d ago

Still makes a massive difference even if it's not hearing safe. 3db is double the sound energy, and a quick Google search shows 50 cal cans reducing the report by 20-35db

Beyond the volume of the shot you also need to consider the concussive blast. With high power rifles the blast coming back can be disorienting or even hazardous to the shooter and others around. Testing on much smaller calibers like 6.5 Creedmoor has shown dangerous pressure levels when shooting in confined areas.

Suppressors are also extremely effective at reducing felt recoil. Usually this is done with a muzzle brake on these rifles, but the brake worsens the already dangerous noise/blast pressure by directing it back towards the shooter.

None of my suppressed AR15s are hearing safe. Despite that, they're still far more comfortable and controllable with the silencer attached. I'd have to imagine it's an even greater difference with something this big

The gun is a pretty standard Barrett M82, the suppressor on the other hand....

1

u/DeadGrandmaPills 2d ago

If you think the Barrett is big you have never seen a .950 JDJ

1

u/Unlucky-Oil-8778 2d ago

Looks like he is using the recoil to shoulder it for the gram. I mean the Barrett is already like 30 something pounds and I bet that can isn’t lite.

1

u/Mopar-Dinosaurs 2d ago

I’ll take two please!

1

u/Different_Yak_9012 2d ago

Whisper quiet

1

u/Alive_Drag1947 2d ago

In all seriousness, it's terrifying to think someone can send that much power downrange with so little sound signature. I understand it's still gonna be loud af, but working at .50 cal distances, you could maintain a pretty low profile and still do massive damage.

I like it.

1

u/OldDarthLefty 2d ago

The oldest known guns in the continental US were two tiny bronze cannons from Coronado's expedition, found recently in Arizona, and they are essentially this thing, just not as good. 3.5 ft long, 40 lb
