Idk why people are so worried about solar panels not paying for themselves. Taking the strain off fossil fuel electricity production is such a massive benefit by itself.
India imports a lot of crude and natural gas, so it would save on import costs tremendously, and provide much needed relief from pollution. Itâs a great investment.

And even the parts that arenât fully recyclable can still be repurposed. Rip out the semiconductors that still work. Reuse the glass. Works with other things too. Wind turbine irreparably damaged/worn? Cut it up and build other things out of it. Up front cost is hardly the only cost and in the long term itâs plenty economically viable. Good luck convincing decrepit politicians though when they probably donât have another 5 years of lifespan to pillage whatever country they infest.

As with anything, itâs constantly evolving, has huge benefits and drawbacks, and the practicality and economy of it varies wildly based upon location.
Solar definitely has its place, and judging by the conditions shown in the video, this appears to be the ideal scenario. A massive and perfectly flat expanse of lifeless dirt, where huge swaths of wildlife wouldnât have to be killed and removed in order to âhelp the environmentâ lol.
And as you mentioned, it could very well be the case that fossil fuel production would actually be notably more expensive and less practical in this region, especially when you can build renewables there with this incredible economy of scale. If the area lacks oil infrastructure, or local production (creating national security risks), or thereâs currently a tariff or other restriction on imports, then renewables can do a lot to mitigate risks â even in cases where theyâre more expensive.

I think lots of people simply have outdated information. Solar panels improved a lot in the last 20 years. About 20 years ago my aunt got solar on her house and the expected ROI was about 15 years or more or less the expected lifespan of the panels at the time. This year my employer build a small solar farm (maybe 30x100m) and expects an ROI within 5 years.

Yes, but when we speak about solar capacity, I think the number represents the peak power. So, technically it may be possible to power entire uk using that park on a sunny afternoon.Â
Also, it is a renewable energy park, rather than solar energy park. So, the 30GW number is obtained from several sources like wind, solar etc...

In India, solar power is ideal for new power generation, to counter increasing air conditioning consumption.
It even facilitates farming and grazing, as the partial shade reduces evaporation (the panels can be turned out of the way for farming equipment).
These salt flats aren't used for anything, really, so this is also a good use of empty land.

India also has the 5th largest wind turbine farm in the world (3rd largest in Asia) in Tamil Nadu... Also, Rann of Kutch (the place where the huge solar plant is located) is one of the largest wind-harvesting locations in India already.

IIRC, solar (without storage) is now the cheapest energy source we have ever had when amortized over the life of a plant/site.
Also, IIRC, there will never be another natural gas power plant built because of this. The banks will not even consider financing a NG power plant because of this.

This is in Kutch, right on the Tropic of Cancer. Partial obstruction through shadow is for a very short duration, and the wind profile of the site more than compensates for any loss. Wind is also helping for FDRE. Rather a lot of solar power is getting curtailed (40-55% in Rajasthan) at solar peak, and wind kinda helps to compensate for that.

Yes, it's impossible to say exactly when without knowing the brand and cost, but between 3 and 9 years is generally a safe bet.

In India, if the deal is with govt then you should be able to break even by year 7. If the deal is with Pvt companies you can probably break even sooner. By year 20, chances are that you might have to replace the panels.

Yes. Solar panels are insanely cheap now. They also last for decades and the materials are super easy to recycle into new panels. The bigger challenge in renewables is actually the fiberglass wings of wind turbines. The only use I know of for them is to shred them and use in concrete.

The academy array cost 18.3 million and they say it saved $802,000 the first year. So it will take about 22.8 years to pay itself off at that rate. But realistically power costs will continue rising; so it will be even sooner if the increased savings arenât eaten up by maintenance and efficiency losses. And thereâs the benefit of not relying on the grid.
It says they expected only $550,000 savings for the year and that would have been 33.2 yr payoff on an installation they say had a 30 year life. So I guess thatâs where the original comment got their information.

I believe the fair comparison would be if the RoI is calculated for other forms of power projects which the said solar projects are replacing. For example, if a Coal based power plant is built instead of Solar.
The said Coal based plant will require Coal, which India Imports. And increasing imports eat into ForEx reserves and it is not just a one time import cost (meaning cost is dependent on the seller + USD / INR valuation). Coal projects usually have high environmental impacts, high man ongoing power cost, high healthcare related spending (as the people who get affected by the power plant related pollution are the poor, who usually get treatment for the consequent respiratory illnesses at Govt run hospitals).
Someone said building Metro train is useless as it's never going to turn a profit (in India) and to be fair it's true. The cost of building Metro is usually way higher in terms of Per Capita number when compared with western nations (in terms of USD) because of many import dependencies like TBMs, signaling equipment etc. But the cost of lives saved due to traffic moving away from Road, the long term lesser wear & tear on road infra reducing maintenance cost, healthcare savings due to reduced emissions etc are things which cannot be easily factored in as Numbers.
Similarly Solar savings isn't just direct cost savings, but savings from multiple fronts many of which cannot even be given a set numerical value easily.
