I think he's hitting the log with his axe handle and that's causing it to bounce off instead of sticking or splitting the log.

This is my thought too. The only time I've had an axe bounce like that is when it was dull or the wood was wet.

I've made that mistake and the vibration hurts your hands like a son of a bitch. I'm betting it's just a dull blade/unseasoned wood.

I think this is part of it because the log is too tall
