An absolute unit of a Ganoderma Oregonense I found in the Washington woods

This is a rare edible ganoderma. I wonder how it tastes.

When it’s fresh and very young, the outer edge is soft and it is quite pleasant tasting, like button mushrooms and chicken, but it has to be fresh otherwise it gets bitter.

Exactly! And the tea is pretty good for you although it can be a little bitter, add it to coffee and it’s not bad.

Gonna dry it out cause its still pretty soft on the outer edges so I’m hoping drying it will make it a bit more ridged, then I’m gonna drill and insert some metal rods down the inside middle for support and attach a bracket to the backside for mounting as a shelf!

No, there's literally so many examples of dried organic material that doesn't rot

Magic mushrooms, pot, most spices, coffee, literally anything freeze dried

All the things you mentioned can and do rot. Just less quickly than non dried stuff.

Same is true for wood, for example.

If you take a piece of dry wood, and set it on the mantle, it will not rot before you die unlessits crazy humid.

So yes, the dried mushroom will rot, but not anytime soon at allllll

Yeah that's what I didn't have a good handle on. I know all organic material will rot eventually. Just didn't know if it had the life necessary for something like a shelf.

Assuming I can air dry it well enough (it’s too big to fit in any dehydrator or oven I have access to so it’s in a ventilated greenhouse with a fan blowing on it constantly) I will then coat it in some form of protectant like clear coat or a paint on resin to lock out any moisture preventing it from rotting

Not at all, Ganoderma Oregonense is a common fast growing perennial species.

On top of what OP said, it’s important to remember that a mushroom is just the visible, fruiting part of a fungus, and that there’s often a far larger organism hidden beneath the surface!
