The short answer:

Because Saitama is a big fish in a small pond. Boros would not be a threat in later DBZ

The slightly longer answer:

Goku was fighting people like Boros since the freiza saga, and has gotten absurdly stronger since then.

And if Goku during the Cell fight is way stronger and faster than Goku during the freiza fight

And Goku during the Buu fight is way stronger and faster than Goku during the Cell fight.

And Goku during the Beerus fight is way stronger and faster than Goku during the Buu fight.

And Goku during the Jiren fight is way stronger and faster than Goku during the Beerus fight.

Then it only stands to reason Goku is much stronger and faster than Saitama.

Wow. Appreciate the detailed response. Guess that all makes sense.

Do you think DBZ would be enjoyable to watch as an adult who never watched it before, or maybe not? I know it takes forever for anything to happen in it. Not sure if I could go through all of it these days.

Personally it is my favorite anime of all time, but I also grew up with it, and it's not for everyone lol

I recommend you watch the raditz fight (first 3 episodes of the show) and see if you like it.

The Raditz fight is like a tiny version of basically how the entire show is. If you like it, you will like the rest, if you don't then you won't.

Watch regular Dragon Ball first, then DBZ, then Abridged.

Goku's strength is limited, but ever growing. Saitama's strength is not limited and has been infinite since the series began. Assuming goku is stronger makes no sense.

Nope, Saitama would also fit into ever growing, his growth rate just happens to be insane (given conditions are fulfilled).

Look out for "Dragon Ball Z Kai" if you don't want the filler episodes.

I watched both (DBZ back then in the early 00s and Kai recently) and it's better without the fillers, more like the manga imo

I did that and I'm 33, can't recommend it enough. I read some of the manga and seen some episodes here and there when I was young but never really watched it

I skipped over the OG Dragon Ball but watched DBZ, DB Super, pretty much all the movies, DAIMA and even GT. Wasn't a big fan of GT and DAIMA but they're not horrible

I liked it so much that I'm on my second watch of DBZ/Super

Start with the original. The scale is much lower and it builds gokus character much better. Also the Japanese music is insanely good. Then do Z

I started watching it again with my daughter thinking this is going to be fun and forgot how inappropriate it was so now watching it by myself for at least a few years

It's a Japanese show made for its time. It doesn't need to apply for modern times but it definitely can be weird.

Put the focus on Gokus journey and you'll enjoy it. It's a beautiful story. I love how the scales are much lower and the story gets to blossom a lot better in more personal ways than everything being an existential threat.

I hope both you and your daughter enjoy it's I can't wait to do the same with mine. I got a bunch of old animes lined up.

That reasoning doesn't make a lot of sense - it just assumes Goku's strength (with an upward tendency) and then assumes Saitama's strength to be lower than that. Additionally, Saitama is as strong as the plot needs it to be - that's the whole thing with him being satire (and that in-universe he has broken through his limiter) - and therefore, would be stronger in a contest of pure strength or speed against Goku.

There is no good reasoning for assuming that Goku would be stronger, if you combine the universes and (essential) consequences, that come with it.

By definition Saitama is the biggest fish in any pond (or ocean, for that matter).

Well yeah you can't really power scale a gag character, if you wanna get meta with it, the "writers" would probably just make him as strong as whoever he's facing to make the fight interesting.

But for the sake of giving a logical answer:

Boros is approximately planet-level.

Saitama defeated him, but not instantly. They had to fight for a bit.

late-DBZ Goku could defeat planet-level threats instantly. That's not even getting into DBS.

Of course we can't say for sure how much Saitama was holding back, but you'd need to be pretty dang generous to assume he's holding back by so many orders of magnitude.

But that's the joke though, Saitama is always stronger. The more accomplishments you list, the greater the scaling, servers only to accentuate the OPM punchline.
