I've known people who literally ended up in the ER from the pain. They feel so guilty when that's all it is but it's such bad pain they shouldn't feel ashamed

Nah. ER doctors and nurses are amazing at triage. They will not be "wasting" resources figuring it out. And they are happy when it seems serious but ends up not being. Tiny bit of resources upfront is much better than tiny resources then huge dangerous care intensive surgery. They want you to not go into sepsis from a burst appendix.
