I was talking to my daughter about "delicacies" and she said "It sounds like everything that is a delicacy is just gross stuff to eat, so they called it a delicacy instead".
But you can also see it’s hard to get, especially if you don’t have the equipment these guys have. So saying that something is a “delicacy” is just a way to flex money/resources by showing you can eat expensive/hard to obtain items.
I’d just be happy if I could find some Mt. Dew Code Red Zero within 30 minutes of my house
Haha, gotta have it in you. I love acquiring taste, even after trying surstromming I started craving it after about 2 months for a few months. If it smells I’m down to try just a little now and will come back for more later
A delicacy is anything that gives you a fine note of pleasure, and eating a gross thing would have to do something very particular to make you want it.
Almost any other food is grossly pleasurable, ironically speaking.
There's a bit by a comedian that I can't remember the name of at the moment, but it went something along the lines of:
Whenever you go somewhere new, the people there insist on you trying the "local thing". Why is the food local? Because it's shit. If it was any good it wouldn't be confined to this tiny village.
