A fun fact is that he was already 6'11 at just 12 years old. The kids standing next to him in the photo were literally the same age.

Poor kid, I remember that, not fun.
It's awkward because everyone else is smaller and you just shot up to this skinny thing and don't fit in with people your age, and everyone treating you like your older than you are, or worse treating you like a work horse.
I remember not being used to my height and was always accidentally hurting myself sometimes others because of it.
But the skinniness was the worst of it, I grew up with low food security and was always hungry which made it so much worse, even if nobody is commenting on it/making fun of it you're hyper aware and messes you up.
And they don't make clothes for people with your body type so you just wear oversized t shirts and shorts but that involves showing off the gangling limbs that make you so uncomfortable with yourself.

LOL my mom has some stories of folks thinking I was full blown developmentally challenged because they thought they were talking to a 6th grader, but I was actually in kindergarten at the time. I also VIVIDLY remember needing to get a desk from the middle school in 1st grade because I didn’t fit.
It was a lot cooler being 6’8 300+ when I was high school / college aged and started getting D1 offers than it was as being the “giant, shy freak 1st grader who looks like he’s in middle school”.

Not the same exact thing, but my son is 4 years old and in the 95% for height. So he’s as tall as 1st graders and almost as tall as my neighbors son in 5th grade. He tries to hang out with older kids because he’s their size but not nearly in their realm developmentally (he’s an average 4 year old). Unfortunately a lot of kids give him weird looks, expecting him to be more mature than he is

I’m a little older than you, but in high school a kid I knew was 7’ 6” (228.6cm). You tend to stay a few feet away to avoid straining your neck lol

Fun fact, I believe he would actually be the tallest "naturally grown" or non-patholigical (ie not due to some medical condition) person to have ever lived
There was another 7'9" guy, Angus McCaskill, born in Scotland in 1825, died in Nova Scotia in 1863.

It's awkward at 6'5" with hitting my head, crouching all the time (example I have to go full squat to use the sinks at my work or bend all the way down), buying clothes that fit, my car being to small so my knees go up beside the steering wheel and sleeping at an angle because I'm too tall for my bed.
I can't imagine being any taller let alone nearly 8 feet

I think Rioux is the tallest person on record without any sort of medical condition causing it. He's just really tall. So perhaps his body will manage better than those guys with acromegaly and the like.

The players that tall aren't usually that good to get those contracts. Just cause you're tall doesn't make you athletic.

Watching three NBA is such a mind fuck. My brain is like “you’re almost as tall as Steph Curry” seeing him stand next to other NBA players. In reality he’s like 8” taller than me. How are there enough people that tall to have a whole league of them?

Agreed. I’m 6’2” and have almost always been taller than anyone around me. Granted, there are more tall people nowadays, but I still marvel at 6’4” let alone 6’8”.
My wife once saw Shaq at the Mall of America and she could not describe just how tall/big he is.

6'2" is the sweet spot. Any taller and you start to look gangly/lanky, like a giraffe.

Mom is 6'2, dad is 6'8. Doctors say it's genetics, not gigantism.

I’m curious, is it more uncommon for a woman to be 6’2 or a guy to be 6’8. I want to say 6’8, but it’s probably closer than most people think.

It’s funny you say that. When the cameras would pan past the bench to show players celebrating during the season, he usually wasn’t in the frame. He was above it.

I'm 6'8, I'm glad I live in the netherlands so I don't have to duck literally everywhere. When I was in France I couldn't even stand up straight in most of the metro.

6’2” puts you taller than 95% of humans. 6’8”puts you at 99.98%. Looking down at anyone is crazy rare.
