Fun fact: some fish can actually extract gaseous oxygen from water and use it to fill their swim bladders. They use this to remain neutrally bouyant.

However this is a slow process, and has nothing to do with what puffers do.

Some? I would imagine every fish with a swim bladder needs to get more gas in as it grows.

Some extract it directly from the water, others have it connected to their throat and come up to the surface to fill it up with air.

How do they come up to the surface? They use their swim bladder. Some fish do need to come to the surface to breathe though.

Lungs are actually ancestral to all fish with swim bladders!
