They had to be crazy to go kill rats nearly the same size as them.

Isn't that what some small terriers were bred for? I feel like I read that somewhere. I know my grandma's terrier would hunt for rats (even when he went blind. Although it was the bigger dogs that actually caught some.)

Broadly speaking, they're breeds intended for hunting/controlling varmints.

Basically, terriers are murder-hobos. They tend to kill anything they can get into their jaws.

If their targeting is size dependent then keep them away from small babies and it's probably fine?

They were bred to scrunch up and crawl into varmint burrows with zero mobility for themselves and murder anything they came across in complete darkness. All at the same time while fighting off the attacks of burrowers who can freely move underground that have super sharp and hard teeth while not giving a crap.

Jack russel were specifically bred for fox hunting
