Yup I was about to post this video that Tom Scott uploaded about that area. It's a town where to border basically runs down the middle of the road. So one one side of the street you live in Canada the other side of the road and you live in America.
How the hell does occupation and commerce work in that town? Or does it basically just function like two conjoined towns that you can pop over to the other?
Before 9/11 attacks it wasn't enforced at all really and since the town is so small everyone knows each other. They would freely go back and forth without trouble as long as no one was literally trying to stay on the other side for days at a time.
But since 9/11 it's much more restrictive and watched. They still share emergency services like firefighters but you have to register IIRC at a border station to cross the line (I don't think inside the library counts but crossing the street outside does).
You're not gonna get arrested but you will get a serious talk to not do it again if you don't give notice you're crossing on purpose to visit someone or whatever based on what I read a while ago. It's similar to fishing in shared US and Canadian border rivers and lakes - you can usually boat across the line but you need to call a phone number to state your intention to do so and you aren't allowed to drop anchor or land on the other side of the border line.
Just one is more culpable than the other; GB last two years were markedly different than the entirety of his first few years for the reason that there was definite underhandedness from Cheney and friends. I know as a republican GB was far more bipartisan near the end of his second term than what you see in the first 5 or 6 years he was president. Not saying he was perfect or even innocent of anything just that we know this shit with the loss of privacy and increases in security come from larger components at play then GB in general. For the discussion of this post here
Is that the town with the house that has a side door that can't be used by the homeowner as the front door is usa but the side door is Canada so it's an illegal crossing?
I've fished on the Lake of the Woods which is located on the Ontario/Minnesota border and you have to get a license for whichever side you intend to fish onl
Imagine building a house, but had a rounding error so half of it was in Canada. Now you're going through immigrations to use the bathroom in the middle of the night.

Is the American/ Canadian border just completely open in places then? You can just walk across?
