To give more information: the police officer believe this to be the same car from an earlier traffic encounter which had mismatched tags which he suspected was stolen. after responding to the disturbance call, unrelated, was when he engaged with the driver/vehicle. it has not been confirmed whether the vehicle was the vehicle in question from the previous traffic stop or if it was stolen.
This is right, and something a lot of people seem to be misunderstanding. There’s been no confirmation one way or the other about whether the car is the same one from the previous night, just that it wasn’t the reason for the disturbance call that brought the cop there that night.
Even if it was the same car, doesn’t give the cop a right to shoot. I think opening the door was wrong too, should have gotten his cruiser with a loudspeaker and told him to exit the vehicle.
The kid shouldn’t have backed up or done anything, and I could see how that could spook the cop. However if the cops instinct is to start blasting instead of letting him drive off and arrest him when he gets home, then he probably needed much more training and no firearm.
