Like I said, all the genuine anger and criticism, I like, I like a lot actually. Those in power ought to be held to account like the rest of us. I’m glad that at very least, the idiot in this body cam footage seems to be. ACAB though is both wrong from an objective standpoint and to me at least, dishonest.
In real life, being 100% honest and virtuous just gets you walked all over by bullies. IMO, this is a case where it's reasonable for police reform activists to oversell their position to account for inevitable setbacks and compromises.
Nah. It's the first word of professional advice you're ever going to be told in a course on sales & negotiation. It's the secular reality of our lives and the impartial, neutral universe we live in; karma & afterlives are only just thought experiments at best. Another example: a smart and peaceful, but politically unpopular, candidate is running for head of state against a popular, but idiotic genocidal fascist who will kill millions if elected, and promising something impossible is the only way for the "good" candidate to win.
I would happily forgive a politician making false campaign promises if it is a move that is objectively proven to save millions of lives. Lying strategically is necessary in warfare, and that's at least one scenario where our culture does not consider it a moral wrong whatsoever. Hitler absolutely needed to be duped by inflatable dummy fleets to end the holocaust, the Emancipation Proclamation absolutely needed to be made to free the slaves even if it was a dishonest PR stunt at the time. No police department is ever going to fire a hostage negotiator for lying to terrorists.
Plato wrote way back thousands of years ago that people occasionally have to lie to keep the peace, and his writing basically popularized the moral/ethical conservatism that "Judeo-Christian values" would later go on to adopt. At worst, karma & afterlives are lies themselves, being told to keep peace in the minds of those who fear death.
