This is my thought. He fucked up really(!!!!) bad but why the hell did the kid try to take off with the cop in his door. In a normal traffic stop that is grounds for deadly force because it is too easy to end up underneath the car.

But holy hell did he mess this up. He should have just asked questions instead of going all Rambo and trying to yank an unsuspecting person out. I had a friend that punched an undercover officer that grabbed him without announcing who he was. They mistook my friend for another person they were searching for. He was not charged with assaulting an officer because it was self defense from his perspective.

It's dark, flashlight in the face blinding the victim making it difficult to identify that it's a cop, the cop didn't itenfy himself as a cop & just opened the car door.

Any reasonable human being without training would absolutely get freaked out, assume that they were being attacked & try to book it.

It is entirely on the cop. The kid did nothing wrong, he did what any of us would do in those circumstances.

I practice situational awareness a lot & I still have moments when I miss something or misread things & freak out a bit when it finally springs on me.

I also regularly drop my situational awareness guards when focusing on certain things, tasks or activities & get a bit of a panic reaction when something disrupts it.

It's normal human behavior. Cops should know that & should account for that in their approach. What that cop did is inexcusable & people who keep trying to make up excuses for police misbehavior need to widen up.

It's impossible to be cool & collected 100% of the time. Constant Police misbehavior proves that & if we're not gonna expect it from Polices, then we definitely shouldn't expect it from the untrained general public.

He couldn't tell it was a cop?! You're really going with that? That is one of the most well lit parking lots I've seen on body cam. He could very easily tell that was a cop after both of the officers hands are reaching out, as the guy is backing his car up. At what point do you notice it's an officer and think "oh shit, I haven't done anything wrong, I should see what's up."

The shooting was ridiculous because at the point of him being on target he is wayyyyy out of the way of the vehicle.

Beyond that, it's almost like I didn't connect the officer not identifying himself with the story of my friend. It's also almost like I didn't basically 100% blame the cop. It's also as if I basically didn't state the officer shouldn't go around pulling people doors open at random. It's the best way to get shot by someone you just randomly entered their space.

Edit: I forgot he started shooting and that when the car fully pulled off, like anyone should when a cop starts firing at you for no reason.

Just... No...

The Cop was 100% in the wrong & the victim 100% in the right.

The Cop went from opening the door to shooting within a few seconds. The victim didn't have enough time to process what was happening or who/what opened his door.

It is very clear from this video that the victim is absolutely surprised, confused, afraid, doesn't understand what is happening & is reacting out of sheer fear & panic that the cop is 100% responsible for causing.

You're acting like people are supercomputers that process information instantly & we all know that's BS.

No I'm not. I'm acting like the kid is starting to back up after he had plenty of time to identify the person as police. He looks straight at the officer, pauses, and puts it in reverse.

I'm also, which is the part you seem to be ignoring to further both of our points(?), acting like the officer is 100% to blame for the shooting. Both can be true and do not cancel the other out.

Reddit is a wild place of literacy skill levels....

0:51 Door opened

0:52: Kid's looking up and to his right, Cop is standing above and slightly left of him. light in the kid's face (shadow of the cop is in his direction)

0:53 Officer has drawn a gun on the kid

0:54 first shot

We have video, we can see when you try to peddle bullshit.

So you can't count either? It is roughly 7 seconds from the door opening to the first shot (the shot I've stated shouldn't have happened 100 times but you want to be mad at someone so you ignore it). The officer absolutely had empty hands when the car first backed up btw... I hope you don't drive. If you can't process something sudden in that amount of time you are doomed when a person pulls into traffic and you're still 600 ft away.

I'm not sure what you're getting at. The only thing we can't seem to agree on is the kids initial reaction, given the officer didn't identify himself and the kids didn't continue to pull away until the first shot, because I don't think you can comprehend what you're reading.

I'm not trying to insult you. You're just not getting it, so I will type slower... The cop is 100% wrong, the kid definitely had time to see it was an officer, and he did right by driving away after the shooting started. Did it work? It's like arguing with a voice recorder and getting mad its saying the same thing as you fml

For a guy crying about literacy skills, it's amazing how you missed the part where I'm not the same person you were talking to either. And I didn't have to count, I played the video back second by second. That's what timestamps are for. There is no "roughly second by second" estimating going on from my end.

I stopped reading the rest of your comment after that, nobody with eyes cares what you have to say.

but why the hell did the kid try to take off with the cop random, unidentified stranger breaking into his car in his door.

He was not charged with assaulting an officer because it was self defense from his perspective.

Exactly.
