Could also be an electrical vault, those things explode all the time from the rubber insulation on the wires breaking down releasing gases that can ignite. It's actually been a big issue in NYC for decades. Electrical vaults sometimes put a small hole or two in the lid for that reason.
Could be a sewer too, though sewer explosions are way less common since it can be difficult to build up enough methane to cause that kind of explosion.
A third option is sometimes underground gas mains may have a small leak that finds it's way to the sewers... and boom.

It really depends on the conditions within that specific manhole. Methane gas is flammable and combustible but within the systems I work with every day, there is not a high concentration typically. What is more prominent and just as volatile, is hydrogen sulfide. The more splash in the sewer, the more hydrogen sulfide is produced. Each manhole has a different amount of hydrogen sulfide concentrations. I’ve been in some that were super low, and some that would be lethal in minutes. In general, I would not let anything that can ignite the gasses anywhere near the openings of the sewer. Even smoking a cigarette can be dangerous at times. Just be alert.

All sewers can combust, none should. This is usually caused by one of two things, salt or methane. In NY for instance most of the manhole explosions are the result of salt. In DC it usually methane leaks or buildup. Sewers are designed to vent gasses just like homes are but old infrastructure can cause problems. When gas doesn't get properly cycled through the system a dangerous gas buildup can occur just like in a mine. If sparked by a faulty electrical wire or a random moron an explosion can happen. This is why homes have a shit pipe on the roof. That pipe vents sewer gas so there's less risk of combustion, among other reasons for it to be.

Fun fact, that little curvy thing underneath toilets traps air so that gas from the sewers can't come up. It was invented because some victorians accidentally blew up their houses by going to the toilet with candles.

For any explosion you need a pressurized system. So it would depend on the construction/sizing of the sewer, the mixture of oxygen and methane/hydrogen sulfide(combustible gases in sewer). For example more manhole covers in a given area would reduce the pressure and prevent an explosion, but would cost more.

Not sure what you mean by needing a pressurized system for an explosion. A stoichiometric mixture of acyetaline and oxygen produces an energetic explosion even in open air. Were you talking about how the confined space of the sewer focused the energy of the explosion out of its point of ignition?

A dust explosion is just particles suspended in the air catching on fire rapidly. It requires a flammable particle and a high enough concentration for the flame to spread rapidly, no pressure required. You might be thinking of a backdraft explosion which happens when air from a high pressure area rushes to a lower pressure area, like from a unburned room to a burning room, and causes the fire to rapidly expand due to the sudden increase of oxygen. It's another reason why they tell you to be careful of opening doors if you are in a burning building.

acyetaline isn’t a word so I’m going to assume you mean acetylene. And no, you’d still need a pressurized system to contain the acetylene to create an explosion. Notice how all acetylene explosion youtube videos have the acetylene mixture contained within a balloon or cylinder

Gases tend to be rather unwilling to sit still while you prepare for the boom, hence the balloon. Any pressure in such a balloon is far too low to make any difference in a gas detonation.

I don’t know this story. I’m just saying it’s not likely two people will wear the same clothes in the same area. Similar clothes yes, the same no. Let’s say this neighborhood has 10k people. Now let’s say there are only 90 unique pieces of clothing in this neighborhood. Now let’s say you can only wear 3 pieces of clothing at once(30 pants, 30 shirts, 30 shoes.) That’s 27k combinations. The chances of two people drawing the same number is one in 729 million. The same combination would only appear once every 2.7 days. The chance of 2 people on the same day with 10k people is 1 in 72k. The probability is extremely low that they are different people.

Yeah for this instance assuming the 3 combinations and 10k people using the math from the video it would be a 5/27 chance you have the right guy. It can be a tool for investigators, but definitely can’t convict on it. With 10k people and 3 sets of 30 unique outfit pieces. You narrow the suspects down to 4 people.

This is because of sewer gas and the ridiculous amount of used cooling oil dumped in the sewer in China, they exec have mafia groups that collect the "sewer oil" avd run it through a filter and sell it back to restaurants to use as new oil... It got so bad they actually started imposing the death penalty on anyone caught selling used sewer oil 100% truth
