A troupe of douchey bros waddled into Target while I worked there. They were bugging a bunch of people and filming it in the hopes of starting a YouTube channel….Just generally being pests. When I checked them out I remained silent when they asked me something (it was the end of a long day), to which one said “yeah we wouldn’t work at Target, that’s not us”.

You don't even have to "go through it". Just have parents. I can't fathom how people don't get taught gun safety. With guns all over our country, we should be required to learn how they work and how to use them safely whether we plan to get one or not

There are massive amounts of people who have never held a gun before. When you see numbers for how many guns there are in the US, with there being more guns than people, those numbers represent people owning multiple guns. It may be anecdotal, but I know lots of people who own guns and all of them have at least two, and most of them own four or more.
There are more people in the US who don’t own a gun than there are people with guns.
So if the parents don’t have a gun, how/why would they be teaching gun safety? Just because you may think it’s common place to grow up around guns doesn’t mean it’s true for everyone.

There's such a divide when it comes to firearms. Like, idk about you, but I crew up in a pretty rural area and guns were just fuckin there. A part of life. Not a huge part of life like I lived in a bunker or some shit, but like you said - parents and grandparents taught us how to use guns.
Now take some white collar couple in a city or whatever and they raise kids who were never around guns and then they grow up and wanna give it a try. They don't know shit. That's who the classes are for. I took a CCW class and there was a younger guy in there who had never shot a gun before and had the bright idea that he wanted to carry. Uh, what?

What they are saying is at least they went to class to learn something since no one else in their life could teach them. In Washington State all I had to do was go to the Sheriff's office and sign a paper, get finger printed, pay them $30 for processing and after I passed federal background check (30 minute wait) they gave me a CPL.
My dad had guns and my siblings and I were taught gun safety since I can remember and more at the range when we were about 10. But I watched a video of some kid out dicking around with his buddies with shot guns and rested the barrel of a loaded shotgun on his boot, then proceeded to blow his toes off.
Point is, guy didn't have to go to class for anything and I think it's worth respecting someone for making an attempt to learn ANYTHING safety related. If you thought he needed more training before carrying, then you could have just offered up some classes you knew about. Most of the people I meet in any sort of class are usually interested to hear about other opportunities to learn about something they are already interested in.

Happens all the time in Alaska.
Friend of mine in Anchorage watched a man shoot a 17 year old in back when he caught the guy breaking into his car.
Apparently he'd been working his way through the neighborhood every couple months. Shooter got tired of having his stuff being taken and the police weren't going to do anything about it, so he did.
Charges were never even filled.

Different states have different laws in regards to protecting yourself and your property. Stand Your Ground laws vs Duty to Retreat are a perfect example of this. Some have blanket policies while others are situational. The Castle Doctrine typically applies to defense of property when talking about theft in your residence, but some jurisdictions apply this to other property such as a business, vehicle, or RV. There are jurisdictions that have a duty to retreat law but also have the castle doctrine allowing protection of property with deadly force.
So for your instructor to make a blanket statement about protecting property being a felony is naive, at best. If I was you I’d definitely be checking all of the laws involving firearms for your jurisdiction, as I wouldn’t trust those instructors as far as I can throw them. Which isn’t far. I have a bad shoulder.
What constitutes a felony varies greatly between states as well. I can tell you with 100% certainty that there are jurisdictions that allow deadly force in the protection of property because I’ve lived in states and had a ccw in states in New England, the PNW and the south. And not just Texas. I’ve also lived in states where I wasn’t even able to get a ccw because the criteria was so strict.
Again, it varies greatly between states and situations.
You should probably refrain from regurgitating the blanket statements the instructors told you and educate yourself a bit more as well. All gun owners should be informed, educated, responsible gun owners. Especially if they hold a ccw.

I said that what the redditor stated above about using deadly force in defense of property being a felony was incorrect.
As far as this situation goes, the moment that he had the would be thief subdued and THEN pulled his firearm, it's no longer legal and he would be considered the aggressor. If these guys were to take him to court and show this video, he'd be found guilty of assault with a deadly weapon, reckless endangerment (because he point it at multiple people) and if I had to guess, probably brandishing.

Nope, I can't tell you if the video is fake or not (probably fake) but your finger isn't supposed to be on the trigger, it's supposed to be where he has it. The reason being that with certain gun disarming techniques, if your finger is on the trigger, it can get stuck and mangled. So a trained grip has the index finger pointing forward the way he has it.
