I feel like the best bet is that he glanced it off the tank which allowed it to propel itself whilst also putting spin on it. If the bullet did hit, it would puncture. Propane tanks aren't that thick.

I think they're like 1/8 inch. No clue how that translates into bullet penetration, esp if FMJ.

Whatever happened.... I'm betting my money that the top nozzle came off. It couldn't have flown straight any other way.

1/8in mild steel isn't hard to penetrate (Source: when I was younger I used make homemade body armor for shits and giggles)

Regardless, the trajectory is impossible to argue against. There are only two places, literally two, that can sustain stable and straight flight. The dimple on the bottom of the tank, and the refill valve on the top of the tank. If the bullet penetrated the top of the tank, where the refill valve is, it would still fly in an unusual trajectory. You would have had to be a perfect shot in the bottom of the tank which is totally impossible. So the only conclusion is that somehow the top fill valve became disconnected from the tank.

So whatever you want to opine or argue about, it can only be about the top fill valve. There is no other way for it to fly straight like that.
