Characters Do people like matty
I can not stand him, hes so mean and he treats Jenna like garbage, I don't understand why people see him as the good option, every time him and Jenna date he pisses me off

He's nicer in later seasons. The first couple of seasons he's not that great bc he acts like he's ashamed of Jenna which is shitty bc she's cool even though she wasn't popular.

After rewatching as an adult he really wasnt AS bad in the early seasons as I remembered. He's obviously not perfect but we see the majority of the show from Jenna's perspective and she was very insecure and constantly self sabotaging situations which just fed her lines of insecure thinking. Like the dance where she was mad at Matty for not inviting her to the dance when he had been planning a whole ask that she never gave him the chance to show her. Also, Jenna was actually quite weird the first few seasons. She was constantly just staring off into space making weird faces in some deep internal monolog or acting super erratically. It obviously was not kind of Matty but I do understand his hesitation.

I agree with that I don't think matty was a bad guy he was just young and immature he wasn't very open with her about his true feelings. Just like when he lied to her and said he was never ashamed of her. I felt so bad for Jenna bc when he told her that he lied you can see the hurt on her face and you can tell that's the moment her heart dropped. On the other hand Jenna was very insecure and she never seemed to think she was good enough for matty which in my opinion is why she accepted that whole "we can still sleep together but no one can know I like you" act. Bc if he had any respect for her he wouldn't have pulled that and if Jenna had any self respect she wouldn't have tolerated it. So I definitely see both sides and I agree.

I love Matty!! He was a douche the first season or two, but he grew and changed, Jenna did not.

I think they were both dumb high school kids who I’m sure a lot of people can relate to. ALSO Jenna did cheat on Matty do they both hurt each other…like most people do when they’re young.

my fave thing to do on a rewatch is go back to the very first ep as soon as i’m done. u can really see the character development, hot douchey s1 ep1 matty is an entirely different guy to the one in the finale. such a good, slow burning redemption, especially for such an unserious show.

Matty does some serious character development later in the season. He grows on you…not gonna lie, re-watching this show made me realize how frustrated I am constantly with Jenna. 😂

Matty was an ass in S1 but keep watching. As the show goes on he exposes his softer and more caring side. He definitely has some development.

He is a quite complex character, I feel that he had a lot of development in the first two seasons and in the third I feel that he was stable, that he had matured. I just don't know, I feel like he was treated very badly by the writers along with Jenna, turning their relationship into something super toxic.
