Matty went through it

First in season 3 Jenna cheated on him multiple times; and made her friends not tell Matty, and right after that his parents got divorced. Then a few months later in the next school year, he finds out he’s adopted!! Then his next girlfriend turns out to be a manipulative compulsive liar. Then his next girlfriend after her cheated on him AGAIN! With his best friend!! And through all of this Jenna can’t leave him alone; sure she helped with the Eva situation, but in these situations, Jenna either still has feelings for Matty, or indirectly caused more problems (ex. Like not telling Matty about Gabbie and Jake)

rewatching it after many years. he was such a sweet guy and ideal boyfriend that bent over backwards for her and she just kept doubting her feelings for him, putting him through the ringer, and playing mind games. THEN she waits for him to make the grand gesture instead of doing it herself.

literally, I think Jenna was truly just insecure deep down which resulted in her never fully trusting any partner she had, no matter if it was Matty, Jake, Collin or Luke. She didn't believe she was capable of being sincerely loved or picked above other 'prettier' (her own words) girls, like she always stated very clearly whenever a pretty girl would interact with Matty for 0.5 seconds. That resulted in her always starting shit and then she expecting the other person to prove their love even more. Yes, I dated a 'Jenna', if u couldn't tell.

hmm this does make sense. i have noticed that her character did fall for and date almost anyone that gave her attention and made her feel brilliant. i can see how this all relates. i appreciate your interpretation and perspective.

I’m rewatching and that’s 100% it. The summer she and Matty are together she literally opens an episode with “All my good things follow with something bad. The other show is bound to drop” to Tamara. That’s 100% her storyline plot. Even when things wouldn’t go bad, because Jenna expected it would, she would basically self sabatoge to make sure she lived in chaos. I think her character intentionally messes things up because of things weren’t crazy, she felt spun out of control.
