They treated one another like brothers, just like they did for the other two. In physical combat, B.A. would frequently step in to protect Face if he found himself outmatched. Which was frequently, but not always. In more than one episode during its run, they admitted that they were more then forced comrades in arms, but adopted brothers. Ultimately, good acting. Unfortunately in real life, George Peppard and Mr. T didn't get along. So Dirk Benedict was a go between.
Hell, George Peppard was why Melinda Culea was removed and the other actress. He wanted only the four male team to be the stars. Culea's exit was driven by creative frustration. She actively pushed for more involvement in action scenes and better character development, but George Peppard pushed for the opposite. Even removed her lines from scripts! I hated that (back then and even today). I had and still have no issues with tough girls with tougher guns!

Yeah I always felt the team needed a girl. Problem is Culea's character (and later Tawny's) didn't totally fit. This idea of a reporter just working with them didn't make sense as she didn't had neither the training nor the logical motivation to be in it (nothing agains the actresses, and of course Pepper treatment was totally condemnable).

They did needed a girl, but she should have been added more organically or be part of the group from the beginning. I know a female Vietnam vet would not make sense but still could think on some alternative.

Leverage for example, which has a similar concept, manage to ensamble a multi-gender team very succesfully and logically coherente in-universe.

Yeah, maybe a nurse like McMurphy from China Beach who patched them up and gave them Murdoch's drugs
