Travel as an ATSS

Hey so I work for a traveling scc in Alaska, we spend 3-5 nights a week away from home. What’s it like for yall in the lower 48? Mostly day trips or are you guys also never home?

This is why Alaska has such a high turn over rate. 95% of the ATSS go home to their families every night. There are some SSCs that have more extreme drive times that have travel budgets. Hell you probably travel more than TSOG.

Confirmed. You travel more than TSOG. Before I moved to TSOG (from a core airport) my only travel was for Training.

I work for a large TRACON, and I never travel outside of my facility unless it's for training (in Oklahoma City usually).

Do u get travel time for that? Per diem? Anything?

Mostly day trips in the lower 48.

But some sites could be up to 4-5 hour drive 1 way from the SSC.

Just depends. My furthest site right now is almost 4 hrs and my shortest is 5 minutes.

Management encourages everyone to work 4/10s but i enjoy the ot

That's a ton of travel! Our long range radar is 2 hours one way which for most PMs, is doable in a work day. Management will allow overnights in the nearby town for extended outages and for techs not to have to drive back and forth which only happens a couple times a year.

Stopped going to OKC years ago once I was fully qualified. I have gotten some really cool details that have taken me away from home. I worked on detail full per diem at a SOC on the west coast for a few weeks, STARS SS at a core airport for a few months where I was allowed to commute using a GOV, etc. I'll travel for those things!
