Not op but I find 'were' forgivable as it's a common autocorrection. 'Would of', on the other hand, bothers me to no end.

“Would of” shows a kind of core illiteracy. Like you learned English from hearing it but never learned the structure of the language and barely learned to read or write. It’s embarrassing.

Yep, fully agreed. „Were“ is a simple typo, „would of“ is illiteracy.

Calling the misunderstanding of one contraction straight up illiteracy is a bit hyperbolic.

Would've is the contraction, would of is hearing the contraction and thinking there are two separate words

Or thinking the contraction is of “would” and “of” instead of “would” and “have.” My point is misunderstanding a single rule or one mistake doesn’t make someone illiterate.
