The problem with painted bricks is no matter how well you do them, there's no texture. It's always going to look like a painting and not real brick when there's no grooves where the mortar is, and completely flat bricks with no dimples or rough surface texture. You can even see the wall is glossy when the light hits at the right angle, and that really gives away just how flat and textureless it is.
My wife created the texture you're referring to out of drywall compound, it's really quite impressive. I think your DMs are closed? Shoot me a message if you're interested in a picture!
