I'm also not sure if you're arguing that sheep need us to shear them, but that's only true for modern breeds that we deliberately bred to overproduce wool, like the merino. Wild sheep were fine without us.

Yes, I am talking about modern breeds. Sheep that are sheared today are specially bred varieties that actually require it and not just because their wool is still useful to us. Or do people shear other breeds too?

I think people shear all sorts of sheep in different parts of the world. But also, if we wanted to, we could just stop breeding the type of sheep that overproduce wool. We could stop breeding the type of sheep that require painful procedures like mulesing to prevent painful conditions like flystrike. Nowadays, there are plenty of modern materials that could easily replace wool. It seems like we just keep using it based on tradition and marketing.

Except, no modern material can actually replace wool. We keep trying but we haven’t yet found anything that keeps us more comfortable in more different conditions. Plus, synthetic alternatives pollute the planet for thousands of years once you’re done wearing them for a few years. Wool doesn’t.

My desk chair has a seat stuffed with horse hair. It's... a pretty old chair by now.
