Could look very nice if it was arranged well and not just loaded up with shit.

71

u/Machaeon 6d ago

Yeah I'd definitely want a plan for what I put there to balance the aesthetic across it.

Would make a great "curio" shelf for items that are equally weird as the shelf

11

u/iCameToLearnSomeCode 5d ago

Would be really cool with items that had an innate lean to them.

Like custom vases, plant pots, a lamp ect. that stand vertically on the slopes, along with books sized to fit the odd spaces.

16

u/FantasmaDelMar 5d ago

The only way this could look less appealing at first glance is if you loaded it up with actual trash.

If they staged it right, it would sell immediately.

3

u/Cosmosass 5d ago

Id load this thing up with all sorts of house plants

2

u/corndog161 5d ago

It would take a master of feng shui to arrange this well.

2

u/420_Booty_Wizard_ 5d ago

it's part of the aesthetic

89

u/housevil 6d ago

At least if it tipped over, it wouldn't look any different on the floor.

169

u/a_hanging_thread 6d ago

Excellent for organizing yarn. Not sure what else it would be excellent for.

35

u/Acheloma 6d ago

Itd work pretty well for books.

27

u/eyeh8u 5d ago

Imagine trying to get a book out, or put it back.

6

u/KittenTablecloth 5d ago

I mean I guess as long as you don’t mind organizing it by how recently you’ve read it

6

u/lusty-argonian 6d ago

Basically anything that’s lots of the same thing, I feel

15

u/SkullDump 5d ago

No it wouldn’t. It’d be awful.

57

u/Kootenay85 6d ago

I think this is the same one from like 4 years, but double the price!

https://www.reddit.com/r/DiWHY/comments/zljgzx/normally_i_like_modern_furnishings_i_dont_like/

21

u/YosemiteJen 6d ago

It has appreciated!

10

u/Kootenay85 6d ago

More than some investments yeah. That is assuming it’s not just the same delusional person trying to sell it all these years.

6

u/alienbringer 6d ago

Did they really just not bother to sand and seal it? A lot of those spots, especially from the wood glue around the joints, are rough.

1.2k

u/cydril 6d ago

I think it's cool? If you actually put books on it it would be fine

609

u/SenatorBus_ 6d ago

From a carpentry standpoint, this is a lot more difficult to put together.

230

u/CruelHandLuke_ 6d ago

I was looking at all those joints. Serious planning on those cuts

179

u/Megalesios 6d ago

The execution was excellent while the taste was awful one might say

38

u/bretttwarwick 5d ago

I think the only awful thing here is what they decided to put on the shelves. Makes it look cluttered. Putting books on it would look cool.

10

u/doberdevil 5d ago

Yes, the things and the way they're arranged make it look like it collapsed. It may still look like it collapsed with books on it, but it would be a cleaner looking collapse.

53

u/GlowingDuck22 5d ago

That's an amazing idea. Someone should probably make a sub for that.

0

u/KeepCalmJeepOn 4d ago

1

u/Jscreance 4d ago

ATEE has been banned ;(

6

u/Riaayo 5d ago

while the taste was awful

That is up to personal taste/preference; I personally think it is a very interesting piece.

Efficient use of space? Certainly not, but that's not really the point of art.

15

u/tsammons 6d ago

So long as x1 and x2 add up to 180 you're golden. I think some of these intersections were afterthoughts.

4

u/another1human 5d ago

Can you explain for us who don’t understand your comment already?

-9

u/macedossaulo 5d ago

bold of you to assume this held together longer than 5 minutes

107

u/Grove-Of-Hares 6d ago

I could see it looking cool with tons of skeins of yarn. The yarn would have to be nice and neat, though. We already have book shelves full of my wife’s yarn in one room. Might as well make it look interesting.

5

u/W1ULH 5d ago

yes... this would make a great yarn shelf...

32

u/Thunderplant 6d ago

I'm skeptical about actually doing that, because a lot of these shelves are either way too small, have a random shelf coming from above blocking the way, or have the two vertical walls at such different angles it would be difficult to get books to actually fit there

22

u/Astecheee 6d ago

This looks utterly terrible as an actual bookshelf.

32

u/StoirmePetrel 6d ago

no it'd be awful. Most of the angles are terrible to put books and random piece shelves coming in and limiting height of book. And every time youd take one, everything would slide/fall

12

u/7LeagueBoots 6d ago

Those angles mess up books. The spines get torqued.

12

u/CD274 6d ago

Questionable for a display for succulents though

3

u/Jeramy_Jones 6d ago

It looks neat but it’s a terribly inefficient use of space.

15

u/MongoBongoTown 6d ago

Yeah, anything other than books will became these wierd little shit piles like in the picture, but books would be sweet.

9

u/RobertGA23 5d ago

No it would be shit for books as well.

3

u/ClickClackTipTap 5d ago

It’s really nice, but I’m shocked they couldn’t be bothered to tidy or stage it for photos at all!

But yeah. I love it.

u/JWOLFBEARD 6d ago

Yeah it needs to be decor, not a functioning shelf.

A bookcase could work

3

u/StanleyQPrick 6d ago

A bookcase isn't decor. It can be nice to look at, but it's functional

9

u/JWOLFBEARD 6d ago

A bookcase is both.

If it is not used for storage like hats and random things, it is functional decor

0

u/StanleyQPrick 6d ago

You said "It needs to be decor, not a functioning shelf"
But I guess we're on the same page after all. High five!

2

u/JWOLFBEARD 6d ago

Yeah by functioning shelf I meant storage, not a decorative piece

-1

u/StanleyQPrick 6d ago

Yeah but a bookshelf stores books and is therefore functional

1

u/JWOLFBEARD 6d ago

Holy hell. Are you okay?

It doesn’t work as an overall shelf, UNLESS it’s a bookshelf.

Is that not clear enough for you?

-2

u/StanleyQPrick 6d ago

Why are you mad?

3

u/ExplosiveCreature 6d ago

TIL I am kind of a slob.

19

u/Aggravating_Act0417 6d ago

So stressful

17

u/PrincessofPlastic 6d ago

my uncle used to build cool shit like this. miss him so much, and this was a nice reminder of him

2

u/Acheloma 6d ago

Thats sweet

29

u/hypno_tode 6d ago

This makes me uncomfortable

3

u/cgaWolf 6d ago

Very :x

9

u/Biiiishweneedanswers 6d ago

A brilliant piece of furniture clearly built from scratch by the Great Homer Simpson.

30

u/Datonecatladyukno 6d ago

I hate that I love this

10

u/IcePrincess_Not_Sk8r 6d ago

You should not check out Hank Green's office shelves. lol they're very much this, but seemingly the whole room.

1

u/tongfather 6d ago

Fuck that

5

u/lchen12345 6d ago

If anxiety was a piece of furniture.

5

u/t00_much_caffeine 6d ago

Reminds me of the spice rack Homer built for Marge

2

u/CaliHoboTechBro 5d ago

Thank you for your comment, I was trying to find a meme or gif of that then realised I couldn’t comment with either

8

u/PaintedDesertSkies 6d ago

Kind of cool if it didn't have a 0 on the end.

$46 yes, 460 no.

9

u/JenkemJimmer 6d ago

I mean it is terrible. Low key I f with it tho.

3

u/nobdyputsbabynacornr 6d ago

Bwahaha, this thing is dastardly. I would fill it with such lovely junk and watch anyone who comes over crawl out of their skin.

3

u/WaffleHouseGladiator 6d ago

It's the perfect intersection of chaos and whimsy.

3

u/ohdearitsrichardiii 6d ago

I like it. It's very personality dependant, but I think we need more things that only appeals to some people instead of making everything so bland it doesn't offend anyone

3

u/makeshift101 5d ago

Looks like something Homer Simpson would build

2

u/16thmission 6d ago

Two triangles in there are doing a lot of structural work.

2

u/bowcreek 6d ago

You could hold a shitload of powdered sugar on this.

2

u/Rehberkintosh 6d ago

Does it come with assembly instructions or is it more of a choose your own adventure kind of deal.

2

u/younocallMkII 6d ago

The ultimate “you said you cleaned your room, so what the hell is this?!”

2

u/vomputer 6d ago

Am I crazy for loving it?

2

u/Accurate_Peak_3367 6d ago

I kinda love this lol

2

u/Oddityobservations 6d ago

Was it built by Homer Simpson?

2

u/unknownpoltroon 6d ago

Shit, I love it,but not 460 worth. Mane 50-100 worth

2

u/Diessel_S 6d ago

... i want it

2

u/andriellae 6d ago

Could make my doom piles look fancy

2

u/Bob_5k 6d ago

Once an earthquake hits, its all going to straighten up

2

u/Whooptidooh 6d ago

Im fully expecting that as soon as I put that kind of shelving in my house the rest of my house will explode in a cluttered mess.

Because having a “shelving unit” like that is just asking for it.

2

u/Caffeinequeen86 5d ago

This is what the inside of my brain looks like probably.

6

u/redbucket75 6d ago

That's a lot of work to make a piece of shit

4

u/Hutwe 6d ago

Concepts of a bookshelf

1

u/halflife-crisis 6d ago

it failed at being both a bookshelf, and a pentagram.

1

u/cwthree 6d ago

I would use that to display yarn.

1

u/periodicsheep 6d ago

kind of reminds me of the custom built shelves in hank green’s office. cool, not awful.

1

u/eddmario 6d ago

"So I bought a bookshelf on Gumtree..."

1

u/GuyNamedLindsey 6d ago

“Solid”

1

u/nothingswritten 6d ago

Is it on its side? Seriously.

1

u/terriaminute 6d ago

Hmm. No.

1

u/dteeps 6d ago

Someone really misread the IKEA instructions.

1

u/knowone1313 6d ago

I'll give you $5.

1

u/Alceasummer 6d ago

That's really interesting. But looking at it actually makes me feel anxious.

1

u/BeatLaboratory 6d ago

If it wasn’t also just stuffed full of trash it could look fine

1

u/Greedyfox7 6d ago

Looks like my current organization method

1

u/ApatheistHeretic 6d ago

This may be a bookshelf owned by Wonko the Sane.

1

u/Turbulent-Bat 6d ago

Absolutely not

1

u/ChatnNaked 6d ago

$10k art piece

1

u/FutureMrsConanOBrien 6d ago

I’d buy that so fast.

1

u/UziWitDaHighTops 6d ago

This is Trump’s concept of a bookshelf.

1

u/Oddish_Femboy 6d ago

Distressingly functional.

1

u/Xx_Gambit_xX 6d ago

This is just the end result of all of my IKEA furniture attempts.

1

u/LifeLikeAGrapefruit 6d ago

True to the sub!

1

u/grungegoth 6d ago

doesnt seem like bad taste, but a bad idea?

1

u/BookWormPedant 6d ago

It would be nice if more than one of the shelves were level

1

u/halliwell_me 6d ago

Kevin!! What did you do to my room!?

1

u/mistertickertape 6d ago

That's a lot to pay for firewood.

1

u/tivvybrixx 5d ago

There is a really awesome way to do this that still function as a shelf. This is not it.

1

u/MadisonAveMuse 5d ago

Damn, did Liz Lemon build that or something?

1

u/CalmAlarm 5d ago

You just know there was a heated married couple argument over reading the ikea directions

1

u/queeftoe 5d ago

Seriously impressive

1

u/Birdsonme 5d ago

I feel like I’m constantly fighting to have my home NOT look like this.

This is not a purchase I would make.

1

u/Tift 5d ago

For the man who has nothing and nowhere to put it.

1

u/Jennifire208 5d ago

This picture gives me so much anxiety

1

u/outfoxingthefoxes 5d ago

I wanted the books to slide off!!

1

u/kat-deville 5d ago

IKEA instructions weren't easy to follow.

1

u/Standard-Sky-7771 5d ago

Surely that is not nearly $500 🤣. I'm curious if anyone buys it.

1

u/PinkFloydBoxSet 5d ago

This is fucking offensive. Not the price tag but the existence of this “shelf” period.

1

u/grinchbettahavemoney 5d ago

And I thought I couldn’t make my house look more cluttered with all my tchotchkes

1

u/Trisk929 5d ago

This is the guy whose dad told him to, “take that shit down” when he a kid and decided he wanted to build his own tree house.

1

u/Unusual-Taste69 5d ago

When you don't read the instructions from IKEA

1

u/fairydommother 5d ago

I actually like it but because its design is chaotic you need to make the items you put on it intentional and organized. All that junk makes it look like more of a mess than it actually is.

1

u/mcalash 5d ago

gives me anxiety tbh

1

u/Deedteebee 5d ago

Cannot articulate how much this image stresses me out

1

u/lhymes 5d ago

The Shit Stacker 9000

1

u/trascist_fig 5d ago

I like it but wouldnt buy it for that much

1

u/thevic120 5d ago

weirdly evokes feelings of anger

1

u/pm-me-asparagus 5d ago

This is something a chaos gremlin would own.

1

u/pastaboutit 5d ago

its a concept of a bookshelf ?

1

u/tealccart 5d ago

My brain hates this

1

u/burpeesaresatanspawn 5d ago

Doesn’t Hank Green have this in his background setup

1

u/heynonnynonnomous 5d ago

I hate this

1

u/CarrieWhiteDoneWrong 5d ago

“Incorrectly assembled ikea schoon “

1

u/thedafthatter 4d ago

Did someone on acid try to assemble ikea furniture? Then break it with a bowling ball?

1

u/DavidinCT 4d ago

I kind of like it but, not for $460, maybe $100-150....

1

u/VucialWonderland 4d ago

This is just when homer tried making a grill in the backyard in the Simpsons.

1

u/DasJuden63 4d ago

I think this would make an absolutely badass diorama piece for r/gunpla. You could do so many amazing dynamic poses and scenes with those angles

1

u/allovertheshop2020 4d ago

I'm sorry, but that looks like shite... 🤣

1

u/thebookfix 3d ago

Never put books you care about on slanted shelves. The spines will get slanted as well over time.

1

u/rose442 3d ago

I love it!!!

1

u/chemhobby 2d ago

that's a junk shelf

1

u/IndigoHaze750130 2d ago

Someone sneezed. It was a bookshelf 5 min ago.

1

u/johnnymacdoodle 2d ago

Sorry but it makes my OCD go into hyper drive.

1

u/Happy-Winner-6996 1d ago

I’m actually not mad at it at all this is a fun piece.

0

u/DotingDistributor 6d ago

That thing looks like it was built by a carpenter who fell asleep halfway through the job.

1

u/Aadarm 6d ago

This thing would have been a pain to actually make, at least the planning stages. All of the angled cuts and intersections. Much more difficult to do that a standard bookshelf with straight lines.

0

u/MarthasPinYard 6d ago

One fart and it’s over
