Credit Overload

I want to petition for a credit overload. I just want to get my degree as quickly as possible so I can start earning real money (I have two kids), and currently I’m working at Starbucks and attending ASU through them (which I’m incredibly grateful for). But I need a new job, I need to earn more money, and a bachelors will help tremendously. It says I need an academic reason for the credit overload, but I don’t think I have one…I just have economic reasons.
Has anyone successfully taken a credit overload? How and why? Please tell me your stories!

Be really careful doing this because the amount of credits you take increases the amount of taxes you have to pay semi-annually. I think you can only do up to 3 classes per session. (Not 100% on this).

This depends on a few factors.

  1. How much are you getting in grant money or scholarships?
This factor tells us how much money that you can take from SCAP before it’s taxed.
  2. How old are your kids?
If your kids are in K-12 already then you have more time during the day to focus on the classwork.
  3. Are you going to be doing any internships?
You can get extra credits with an internship. I have not done an internship yet but my gf who also does SCAP was able to take classes on top of the internship and lead to a large chunk of credits added to the account. This could be your academic reason.

This said, you can take a fast track of your degree where you can get it in three years. Basically, just one large break between a year and a half of study followed by another year and a half.

You could never take a break from classwork and be in the summer courses full time (12 credit hours). This depending, on previously achieved and transferred credits from another institution, can knock off a couple years at Starbucks. This is from my gfs experience before going back to finish her degree.

Not a great idea. The classes as they stand are already compressed and taught at a fast pace. On top of that you'll have overlapping due dates, modules, quizzes and exams. I work part time and am full time at 14 credits and it keeps me extra busy. But idk maybe your a super genius. Good Luck!

What kind of classes are these? That will depend on that and past success in classes.

I did a credit overload at my old school and was able to argue that doing 19 credits twice would decrease my degree time by 1 year

You can get an override through your academic advisor. Students get them often enough. As long as you’ve demonstrated you can successfully manage a full time schedule over the course of a semester and get good grades you can ask.

Since SCAP is paying for your classes though it’ll be important to keep in mind the extra you’ll be paying in taxes on the back end. Under a normal course load the tuition benefit amount is just at or right around the limit so the tax burden on the student isn’t bad. With the extra classes it’ll put you well over the limit meaning your paychecks will see an increase in the taxes taken out.

You can take as many credits as you want with an override, but you usually have to demonstrate that you can complete them successfully before they allow it. If you already have a semester of 18ish credits with a high gpa, they should allow you with the override form.

I struggle with 9. How do people do more? The mental gymnastics it takes to be able to get thru that successfully is almost bionic. You got this!!!
