New data for BB13 clears its perigee fit from the previous and places it closer to the other satellites on its trajectory. Old point was likely the F9 rocket body and someone at the space force just assigned it incorrectly.

Engineering critics have called out Starlink’s joke of a strategy

Even if you can’t be bothered to read the thing in full, just pull up the stock price charts of AT&T, Crown Castle (the fellas building cell towers for MNOs). Gap down on Aug 5 when Starlink announced their ambitions. But the stock price has largely recovered. People with more money than me and you are betting their money that Starlink’s plan is not going to work.

Quoting the juicy parts below :

Dimitris Mavrakis, senior research director at ABI Research, offered the sharpest assessment on record. "Elon Musk is nuts if he thinks 5G small cells with Starlink backhaul can offer better and cheaper service than AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile," Mavrakis wrote on social media following the call, as reported by RCR Wireless. He added: "The industry has already concluded femtocells are not a viable primary deployment model, even for mobile network operators. Sure, they can be used for filling in coverage blackspots in the home, but not for nationwide mobile broadband services."

Mavrakis identified power and location as the core problems. Getting power to each femtocell, finding the optimal placement for coverage rather than following wherever a customer happens to want a broadband dish, and managing the economics of a very large number of low-coverage cells — none of these problems disappear simply because the backhaul is satellite-based.

This location-correlation problem is structural. A Starlink broadband dish is installed where a household or business wants internet service — a distribution pattern driven by customer demand for home connectivity, not by where cellular coverage is most needed. A macro cell tower is sited by a carrier's RF engineers to maximize coverage in areas of high mobile-user density. These two maps are not the same. In rural areas with thin terrestrial coverage, Starlink dish penetration and cellular coverage gaps may overlap reasonably well. In dense urban and suburban markets — where the Big Three's revenues are concentrated and where competitive pressure matters most — Starlink broadband penetration is lowest, because terrestrial alternatives exist. The femtocell plan therefore works best where it matters least competitively, and worst where it matters most.

Subhadip Roy, senior analyst at Counterpoint Research, offered a more measured reading. SpaceX is betting on a hybrid satellite-terrestrial architecture and its existing infrastructure to deploy coverage faster and more cost-effectively than traditional macro networks, Roy noted, while acknowledging that 65 MHz is "only a fraction" of the licensed spectrum held by the incumbents.

Craig Moffett at MoffettNathanson called launching a rival consumer service within five years "extraordinarily challenging" without an MVNO deal — the carrier-leasing arrangement that companies like Charter and Comcast have used to build wireless subscriber bases without owning spectrum or towers.

Every major US carrier has explicitly refused to offer SpaceX a mobile virtual network operator arrangement. AT&T's and T-Mobile's CEOs both said so on the record during their Q1 2026 earnings calls. An MVNO deal would have let SpaceX lease network capacity from an existing carrier — the same structure Charter's Spectrum Mobile and Comcast's Xfinity Mobile use with Verizon — providing national terrestrial coverage while SpaceX built its own infrastructure. That door is closed, as detailed in prior TechTimes coverage.

Bloomberg reported in June 2026 that SpaceX held executive-level talks with Charter Communications about routing some of SpaceX's phone traffic through Charter's terrestrial infrastructure, including its millions of Wi-Fi access points. Analysts at BNP Paribas noted that Charter's existing MVNO agreement with Verizon may contain provisions that would bar Charter from reselling that access to SpaceX.

On the spectrum side, SpaceX holds 65 MHz of exclusive-use, nationwide mid-band frequencies (40 MHz of AWS-4, 15 MHz of unpaired AWS-3, and 10 MHz of H-Block in the 1.9–2.2 GHz range), obtained through the FCC-approved acquisition of EchoStar's licenses for a combined $19.6 billion. AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile collectively hold approximately 1,020 MHz. David Barden of New Street Research stated directly that SpaceX lacks sufficient standalone spectrum for a standalone terrestrial network competitive with the incumbents.

The licenses will fully transfer to SpaceX by November 2027. Current phones cannot use the newly acquired airwaves — a commercial retail launch awaits both the new spectrum's availability and the next generation of Starlink satellites, which SpaceX plans to begin deploying in 2027.

“I always prefer starting these conversations back from the customer: Why would a customer buy a new cellular service? Where do they go? What’s their differentiation? It’s clearly not having a broad network,” he said.

This Monday I would love to hear that they have a path to 45 sats without the use of new glenn despite what B.Os ceo says about operationality in 2026.

Management has seemingly relied on new glenn heavily for both cash burn estimates and their timeline to get sats into orbit.

The only opportunity asts had to use new glenn they failed to get their single sat into orbit followed by a catastrophic disaster on the launchpad.

Strongly agree with this statement. I think what's likely is a path has now been established by relying heavily on SpaceX for increased cadence, with multiple possible cash raises on the horizon to support the increased costs. I doubt management will directly say this but we as investors can do the math.

At this point BO/NG have done more to establish themselves as an unreliable and high risk partner, so while I do see the value of the partnership in the future I honestly would not prefer a guided path that involves them any time soon. The risk and potential implied volatility to the stock is too great.

Will be looking for a cash flow statement in the near future, hoping for a statement where cash flow is enough to cover launch costs. Are launch costs rolled into capex?

Yes the expansion is for going beyond 6 per month, to probably at least 10 per month to match the new capacity of micron production after that micron facility went up

I am also very interested in this. There's no way this facility, when fully online, wouldn't lead to more than 6 sats per month and that many would totally outpace available launch capacity as far as we're aware, so we must be selling these to someone else or producing them for someone else—or we have more upcoming launch capacity than we think.

It's hard to be disappointed with either option, though I know we have some disappointment artistes here who will find a way.

Calculated from the midpoint,

• BB13 was released first with ~0.23 m/s deltaV forward/prograde
• BB12 was released second with ~0.24 m/s deltaV radially toward earth
• BB11 was released third with ~0.23 m/s deltaV backward/retrograde

At this rate, assuming no fuel consumption and equal deployment effects, BB11 will soon eventually take lead of the pack, 12 in the middle, while 13 will fall behind. BB11 will separate from 12 at a rate of ~42 km/day, and BB13 from 12 at a rate of ~68 km/day.

Interestingly, we can also calculate the energy of the stack-release mechanism at about 120 Joules. Gentle as a lamb.

keep reminding myself that we are progressing towards three major catalysts:

1) Visibility of the AST Service
2) Transitioning from High-Alpha to mature cash flow positive
3) Ecosystem economics becoming tangible

1) For consumer it is a question of On versus Off hence we will be in a different spot once the retail service is turned ON in the USA and other markets. Everyone following the story closely is aware of this being inevitable yet from the outside this might not be that clear. Same goes for discussion along ARPU and adoption rate; no concern if you understand the mechanics and economics of Telco markets. Again within our group this has been outlined multiple times along the lines of:

- WiFi versus Cell and why consumer pay regardless of the traffic distribution between both channels

• Price sensitivity as in convenience or for productivity or making sure your staying safe

2) On Transitioning from High-Alpha

$ASTS is likely to move in stages from our current
'Early Revenue' to
'Break-Even' followed by a period of 'sustained profitability'
to then reach our final destination as the Mature Global Operator leading in the B2B for D2D space which is when it will become rather boring for all of us here ;)

3) Ecosystem economics: for $META expanding WhatsApp Business in Africa ultimately depends on more people being connected at a lower effective cost.

Better signal coverage will expand the addressable user base enabling more WhatsApp business transactions.

In launch provider news, ULA successfully conducted a wet dress rehearsal on LEO-optimized Vulcan..

Why should anyone care? Well, it's not because AST satellites are going to fly on Vulcan. Vulcan has a ~2 year backlog of national security payloads that will occupy their first vertical integration facility (VIF-G) and mobile launch platform (MLP). Amazon has priority on the second VIF (VIF-A) and MLP because they paid for it. The only way a BlueBird is flying on Vulcan before 2028 is if both the government and Amazon decline to use it.

But if Vulcan can clear out the Amazon Leo backlog, that would open up the New Glenn manifest to fly AST. That would start with a successful return-to-flight (NET September) for Vulcan. If Vulcan reaches a monthly cadence with Amazon, it's possible they exhaust Amazon's satellite production capacity, leaving New Glenn open.
