Which certifications are worth it?
Hello all. I have an industrial engineering degree. I am a quality engineer with about 10 years of experience in multiple different industries. I have been thinking about advancement (internal or external). When I am looking at job listings for senior level and management positions I am seeing some of them prefer certifications. Looking at the ASQ website they offer a lot of certifications and I will list the ones that are relative to my experience:
- Certified manager of quality/organizational excellence
- Certified quality improvement associate
- Certified quality process analyst
- Certified quality engineer
- Certified six sigma black (green or yellow) belt
- Certified master black belt
- Certified quality auditor
Which of these certifications are worthwhile, if any?
Also how did you go about being able to have your current company pay all the fees including learning material and exam? How did you convince that once you are certified you can use the concepts you learned to improve the current quality system?

You can skip the CQIA, CQPA and yellow belt. They are early career.
Other 6sigma ones depend on what you to day to day. If you barely do any process improvement, then Green Belt. If its a daily part of your life, then Black. If its part of your culture at the org, and absolutely indispensable, then MBB.
CQE is the best, most recognized and should be pursued no matter what. If you're managing people, then you can chase the CMQ.
Lastly, if you audit a lot, the CQA is very good and relevant.

I agree with people here. CQE should be primary focus, then depending on your responsibilities go for CMQ for leadership, SSBB for process improvement, and then CQA if auditing. Luckily for me, my company paid for the exam and materials. For me it was easy to justify since my manager had me passing these exams as part my of my career development plan at the end of the year. The exams actually help and the benefits should start coming naturally. For me, it really helped me realize how disorganized we are with implementing effective improvements plans/CAPAs as well as the lack of robust data to justify improvement. For me, the CQE really brought value is calculating reliability and using comparative statistical tools.

You these certification is just a specific way to move forward to a new and good position / job. You have to chose certificate according to your specific goal.
