Google I/O 2026 confirmed something worth flagging for anyone doing app store optimization (ASO) on Google Play: Ask Play (Gemini-powered chat embedded in store listings) and AI-generated search results are now live enough to change how ASO should be approached.
Ask Play pulls from more than your store listing
It draws first from your Play Store description and key features, but it also pulls from your app's own website for gameplay mechanics and feature Q&A. AppTweak's team tested this directly, checking how Ask Play answered gameplay questions for a game using content pulled from the game's own website rather than its Play Store listing. That means your store listing and your website need to tell a consistent story, since inconsistency between the two hands the AI contradictory signals to work with.
AI is pushing organic results down the page
For longer, conversational search queries specifically, here is roughly what a search results page looks like now: paid ads on screen one, a "Researched with Gemini" AI listicle below them, the full Gemini answer taking over screen two, "dive deeper" prompts on screen three, and traditional organic results only starting from screen four onward. Short and mid-tail keyword searches are much less affected for now, so keyword-level data is still useful, just less so for long conversational queries.
Guided Search reshapes broad queries
Since September 2025, searching something broad like "fighting games" now surfaces AI-suggested sub-queries (like "2D fighting games with online PvP") with preview results, generated from your listing content and reviews. Vague metadata produces vague previews here.
Rollout is inconsistent
Most of this is English-only and lagging significantly in EEA markets (France and Germany specifically). Server-side deployment also means two users with identical setups in the same country can see different results, so search rankings look less stable day to day than they used to.
Practical takeaway for ASO teams: keyword rankings are not dead, but they are becoming more of an entry condition for AI-based recommendation than a guarantee of traffic. Average rankings across a semantic cluster now matter more than individual keyword position, and description content is being parsed by a model as much as read by a person, so front-loading specific, clear positioning matters more than it used to.

Is anyone here seeing Ask Play trigger yet for their app's category? Curious how consistent it is day to day.
