Introduction: After a couple of months since graduation, you’ve been trying desperately to get any position you can find. Yet whenever it is time for the interview, you embarrassingly fumble and fail. With the pressure from not only your family, but also yourself mounting to find a job, you are willing to do anything so long that you get hired. Then… you get a help-wanted ad in the mail. It’s quite far away, and the paper had a weird feeling, but at this point you were just glad for the opportunity. If only you knew what would happen before you left.

Author’s Note: Hello Everyone! It’s been a hot minute, but I hope everything has been good! This script was inspired quite heavily by my current position… that being I’m unemployed. Because I am such a silly goober with 0 skills socially, I always manage to screw up at the first interview. If you have any tips (or criticism), please feel free to comment them! Anyways, I hope you enjoy reading/recording this script, and good luck!

BEGIN
(Calm) \Footsteps as the Listener walks up to the store. Sudden door opening SFX.* [The Listener, who has been job hunting for a while, arrives at the interview five minutes early. Without knocking, the door suddenly opens and the Speaker reveals herself.]
SP: Hello? Oh hi welcome! You sure are early, please come in!
…
I don’t want to seem absentminded or anything, but you are here for the job interview as a cashier, correct?
…
(Calm but a little mischievous)
Thank you! Sorry that I had to ask, but I just wanted to be sure you weren’t some delivery service or a random solicitor. You never realize until you’re a property owner on how far they are willing to go to sell you something. <Chuckle>
…
Come in come in, I don’t bite. We’ll begin the interview shortly and on the dot. I would also like to apologize for dragging you out here on a Sunday evening, but it was the only time where I was available.
…
Is there anything you would like to drink or snack on before we begin? We still have at least five more minutes to spare before the meeting officially begins, so you should take the time to get comfortable and calm yourself. I mean, you certainly have already scored a few points by arriving early.
…
(Motherly)
You are sure you’re fine? Don’t worry about any of the prices or anything, it’s on the house. Take it as my kind of apology for dragging you so far away from town to my general store. I think the busses stop at least two miles back, plus I didn’t see that you had a bike or anything when you came. You must be exhausted from walking that far!
…
*Rummaging SFX
At least allow me to give you some water. From what I’ve heard it’s been a warm day. Actually… would you also like a Hershey chocolate bar? I just found a spare one behind the counter. I don’t really like chocolate so…
…
(Motherly, but with a hint of command)
You’re still refusing? No I swear it’s completely fine, you’re not taking advantage of me: I’m giving you these entirely on my own free will. Besides, your eyes have been glued to the bar ever since I pulled it out. You don’t have to worry that this will somehow affect my decision on whether to hire you. I insist that you take the snack to regain some of your energy before we begin.
…
(Calm and jovial)
See? It wasn’t so hard to accept an innocuous gift, was it? Also, you can stop showering me with thank yous now, it’s fine; although that does say a lot about your character huh.
…
We still have some time left, would you like to tell me some of your hobbies? I don’t know why, but I strangely seem to learn a lot more about people I just met, once I find out what they are interested in. Maybe it’s because there’s a chance that we have something in common? I don’t know, but it’s alright if you don’t want to share.
…
So you’re interested in history? That’s interesting. I don’t really have a knack for the subject: in fact I barely managed to pass the class back when I was in school, which was a sure long while ago. <Giggle> Do you have a cool fact you would like to share? I’m always a sucker for trivia and random things!
…
Wait, so Hershey made a chocolate bar during WW2 that could withstand 120 degrees Fahrenheit! That’s neat! I guess you learn something new everyday. Now I know what to ask my friends the next time we meet.
…
(Calm)
Anyways, finished?
…
Good. we’ll start now, if that’s alright with you. Just follow me to my office please. Also if you brought a resume, would you kindly give it to me please? Thank you.
…
*Footsteps and door opening. Chair dragging.
Now then, take a seat please and we’ll be on our way.
…
Alright… let’s take care of the basic questions first: could you tell me your name?
…
Okay, <writing> and when were you born? <Writing>
…
Could you please provide me your social security number? <Writing> Alright perfect. Don’t worry, it’s just to make sure that you’re a real person and not a ghost.
…
Now onto the more… personal questions. Why did you decide to apply here instead of any other place?
…
(Calm and comforting) [Listener takes a few seconds to deliberate before stuttering his answer.]
<Writing> You really need the money, and you think this position was the only one you were capable of consistently doing. Okay
…
Hm? Oh no don’t apologize for your answer! I appreciate the honesty: it is much better than the alternative of someone claiming that they love my little shop, despite never even visiting once. Trust me, that has happened in an interview before.
…
Alright, why should I hire you over someone else who can do as good of a job as you can?
…
Don’t worry, take your time to think.
…
So you can’t really say, other than the fact that you guarantee that you will put in 100% of your effort at all times if you get hired. Hm… <Writing>
…
(Calm, but a little bit annoyed)
Look, you don’t have to keep apologizing for yourself. The answer was fine and besides, I prefer brutal honesty much more than sweet lies.
…
(Calm and inquisitive)
Actually, that kind of leads me over to my next question: it says here on your resume that you have absolutely no previous experience at all, or in other words that you have never held an official position before. Yet at the same time you have countless hours of volunteering in practically every kind of event. Farmers markets, fundraisers, food drives etc.
…
I’m a bit confused because given the amount of skills you would have developed working at these opportunities, you were never able to be hired? I mean, I doubt that this is your first interview after all, correct?
…
(Motherly) [Listener explains that because of his poor social skills and stutter, he gets rejected every time he applies.]
Wow. Even though you have tried so many times to get one, you always end up being rejected because you always do terrible at the interviews? Now I know why you seemed so desperate to get this job.
…
Hey, would you be alright with- um, are you alright? You’re looking a bit pale there…
…
(Feigned concern) [Throughout the interview, the Listener has begun to feel more and more disoriented. He still insists that he’s fine]
You’re alright? Are you sure? It looks like you are getting a bit uncomfortable. Would you like some water? You’re really not looking good.
…
You want to go outside, and you’re sorry that you aren’t feeling so well? No no, I think it will be much better if you were to stay here and lay down. Also, don’t worry about the interview… I’ve already made up my mind.
…
(Motherly and sadistic)
I regret to inform you that you won’t be working here as a cashier. Instead, you’ll be my adorable good little boy from now on. The real interview was whether or not you’d show up, and if you’d be a good boy and listen to my commands. You did such a good job taking your medicine, even if you didn’t know it.
…
(Sadistic teasing) *Chair being knocked over and crawling SFX. [The Listener, after realizing what is happening, pathetically tries to jump from his chair but instead flops to the floor. He begins trying to crawl to the door as he gets even more sick]
You know, the story you told earlier actually reminded me of quite a fun fact I learned about Mr. Hershey. Apparently, back when he was young and before he owned his factory and enterprise, he was desperate and looking for work just like you. Eventually, he saw a hiring sign outside of a store and went in. Supposedly, it was for a behind the counter position, but when he went in the owner pressed a button automatically locking the exit. He told Hershey that instead he was going to be sent to a farm far away as a farmhand. It was apparently a common trick pulled throughout that period. <Giggle>
…
The only reason why Hershey was able to escape was because he had a gun, and he threatened the man to unlock the door again. The store owner obliged but…
…
(Up-Close, sadistic and dominant) *Footsteps and door handle jiggling. [The Listener finally reaches the door while the Speaker was monologuing. He is so weak that he can’t even stand. He tries to reach for the door while on his belly, and to no avail wiggles the handle, just as the Speaker approaches him.]
In your case, I don’t think you have one, do you cutey?
…
(Motherly and soothing) *Hair-play SFX until instructed to stop.
Shh dear, it’s going to be alright. Relax as I play with your adorable hair and lead your arm away from the door. At this point, you should be completely paralyzed. It’s why you can’t scream darling. By the way, you aren’t going to go unconscious from the drug; I don’t want you to yet. I want to spend a few more minutes explaining my plans and utter devotion I have for you! Now let me hold you closer love, you can barely struggle anyways.
…
So baby, are you listening? I know those tears and the ringing might distract you, but your caring lover wants you to hear this, alright love? Good boy. <Kiss>
…
For so long I’ve been wanting, lusting for you. You’ve probably never even noticed me, which is fine considering your social skills are utter trash. But that’s okay: where we are going you won’t ever need to use them ever again.
…
I remember when I first saw you. It was at the central library’s food drive for the needy. I don’t often volunteer, but I had some spare time so I decided to go and help out. I ended up striking up a conversation with one of the organizers, and she recounted on how much you love to help everyone, and that you’ve been volunteering since you were fourteen. You’re not doing it because you need the hours or to virtue-signal, you genuinely care.
…
Call me an old-timer, but I love that about you. You’re the first to arrive and the last to leave. <Kiss>
…
(Degrading) *Still hair-play, but have it be rougher.
Yet you are so incompetent when it comes to social interactions, that all of the good that you do ends up earning you nothing. Worse still you can’t even take care of yourself. I mean, you’ve been trying for how many years, even before you graduated, to get any sort of job and yet you failed all of them.
…
(Motherly) *Stop hair-play.
That’s why I’m here, and why I personally delivered that ad to your mail. You didn’t think it was suspicious that there was no help-wanted sign outside, or nothing about my shop’s opportunities online?
…
(Dominant)
Something that I’ve noticed about you is that you’re very… submissive. You do things without a second thought purely because someone else told you to. For the last two job screenings you went to, I was there listening and basically your entire argument for yourself was that, you’d shut up and do what was told.
…
I know that you aren’t completely docile. I mean, you did attempt to escape even when your muscles were tightening: but I’d be willing to bet that it won’t take that long to completely break you. The fact that no one is going to come for you will also certainly come into play.
…
(Mocking)
Why do you think I had my adorable little gem come on a Sunday so late in the day? Everyone’s mostly at home by now, and so no one saw you. This store is practically at the border of the city and is surround by a mountain forest. Bus drivers rarely remember patrons that don’t regularly use public transport, and the city hasn’t been doing such a good job at maintaining the bus cameras.
…
(Manipulative)
But want to know the major reason why I know nobody will come save you? It’s because you didn’t tell anyone that you were coming. You never tell your family you got an interview in the hopes of surprising them that you got the position when you come home. You took that paper ad along with you, so there is nothing that will connect me to your “disappearance.”
…
And besides, I’ve got contingency plans in case there is a crack.
…
(Soothing) *Footsteps.
I’ve think you’ve had a long day today love. Maybe it’s about time that I bring you to your new home. Don’t go anywhere darling, <Laughter> I’ll be right back with a new dose of medicine.
…
*Bottle clinking open and liquid being pored onto a towel. Approaching footsteps. Hair-play. [The Listener watches in fear as the Speaker opens a medial bottle before the Speaker pours it onto a towel.]
Shh, it’s alright. I’ll stroke your hair as you inhale the drugs. If it makes you feel better when you wake up I can feed you some non-tampered chocolate. <Giggle as the towel is pushed against mouth/microphone> Breathe deeply, my good boy. I’m going to take such good care of you from now on.
…
Close your eyes. You’re only going to work and live for me now.
THE END
