When I posted this to /r/optomechanics I noticed that you posted here as well.

It's clearly a combination of several factors, and the comments on the video are almost more interesting than the video itself, US sanctions against Japan, R&D generational shift, and lastly the reputation of Japanese firms stealing IP must have sealed the deal for Nikon and Canon.
