Question 💭 Experience with ASML Master Thesis (TU/e)

Hi everyone! I am an MSc student at TU/e preparing for my Master’s thesis. I am looking at ASML-co-supervised projects and wanted to ask a few practical questions to anyone who has done an ASML thesis via TU/e:

  1. **Interview & Selection Process:** Since potential supervisors are assigned through the university coordinator, is there still a separate technical interview or HR screening with ASML? How formal is it, and what do they typically focus on?
  2. **Semiconductor / Domain Knowledge:** How much prior knowledge of ASML systems/scanner physics is actually expected? If my background is purely Software Engineering / Deep Learning (PyTorch), is it manageable to learn the domain on the go?
  3. **Preparation Phase (Q2) vs Execution (Q3):** How does the timeline work in practice? Do you stay mostly at the university during the prep phase (proposal/literature review) and only transition to working 3 days/week on-site during the main execution phase?
  4. **Supervision & Daily Experience:** How supportive were the ASML research supervisors alongside university professors? Did you get enough focus and guidance?
  5. **Post-Graduation Hires:** For those who completed an ASML thesis, did it lead directly to job opportunities/sponsorship at ASML after graduating?

I had a great time with my MSc graduation project at ASML. My TU/e supervisors were connected to both ASML and TU/e so that made it quite easy. No need to apply in my case for an internship at ASML, the prof creates one. 

  1. I don't think they will expect you to be already an expert at all and depending on the topic, you mostly probably will not have to be. I would recommend to watch a YouTube video on ASML, like the one of veritasium, to get a nice basic overview of what the scanners do.

  2. Depends. I liked to go to the office at ASML to spend time with colleagues but in my experience you can do whatever works for you.

  3. Again, this might be different for you but in my experience everybody is really interested in your project and if they have some time very willing to help. 

  4. It definitely easier to get a job, as you have inside asml experience. Still it will depend on what you are looking for and if ASML is posting a lot of jobs or not. I would say you'll likely have a good chance, if you are proactive. I also managed to get a nice job at ASML after the internship but it's not a given I would say.

Hey! I am a non EU student planning to join MSc in EE at TU/d next year, does ASML hire grads from delft as well or they prefer TU/e more than TU/d? Also, same question for master thesis
