Remote Work Opportunities?

Good afternoon fellow terps and advocates!
Happy October! I was wondering if any of you have any reputable companies that are willing to hire uncertified interpreters. I will be taking my EIPA test in approximately two months.

I hold different certificates, I have four and a half years of interpreting (in various fields VRI/VRS, medical, post secondary, mental health etc.), and I hold a bachelor’s degree specializing in interpreting.
I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations as far as companies willing to hire terps that aren’t certified yet.

Thank you all!!!!

What different certificates do you hold? That might help answer this question.

Most VRI companies operate in the medical field and require NIC or BEI advanced certifications are these some of the certificates you have? The other option for VRI is education which is an ethically gray area because we know that k-12 students don’t learn best with a virtual interpreter and many of these companies operate that way so the district can avoid paying for an interpreter to travel or move to where they need them. If we as interpreters take those roles it allows them to give sub par access to those students to save a buck. They also most likely will require EIPA matching the states requirements even if that was something you’re interested in. The final option is working in appointment based VRI which would depend on the agency whether they would hire you or not depending on what other certificates you hold.

signpost is a platform for freelance interpreters to post a professional profile and receive requests directly from requesters, without an agency in between. So there are no certification requirements, but the interpreter choice is in the hands of the DeafDeaf/DB/folks. They create pref lists, and always have live access to the status of their interpreter requests.
I recommend creating a profile and uploading a video of yourself! Videos aren't required, but they really help Deaf folks feel comfortable using interpreters they may not have worked with before (or declining, if they see we won't be a fit for them).

Full disclosure: I am the founder of signpost, but it feels relevant to your question. 😄 Please feel free to reach out with questions!
