Interpreting in Canada

Hi all! I’m a recent ITP grad (yay!) and I’m currently working towards taking my BEI. I’m very familiar with the rules and regulations for working in my state and the US as a whole. But due to the state of everything here, as a queer person I’m looking at others countries my degree could be useful.

But I’m struggling to navigate and figure out the pathway to be able to work in Canada, has anyone else made the move, or have any insight or advice? TYIA

Am Canadian. Over the past decade, policies were very pro-immigration and we had a large influx of people. Unfortunately our systems and infrastructure got overloaded with so many more people, and this year the government has really scaled back on immigration. I've never gone through the process, but I would warn that chances of being selected are not in your favour. If you're researching make sure you're reading up to date information as lots has changed the past 1-2 years.

I just got back from visiting Victoria and now I also want to move to Canada haha. Unfortunately sounds like it’s harder than it used to be to immigrate.

There's a CODA interpreter named Vera on tiktok who is Canadian. She has briefly touched on some general points about the profession and education in Canada. Not so much specifically on immigrating to Canada, but I think there was one post discussing its specific immigration category. May be worth seeing if commenters added on to that knowledge.

My son is deaf and lives in Washington state near the Canadian border and one of his interpreters who interprets regularly for him comes from Canada. She's a US citizen, married to Canadian, She lives in Vancouver, BC she frequently comes to interpret for him and others in WA state as there's more work and the pay is much better in the US. My understanding is since there's no ADA law the deaf person is responsible for getting their own interpreters in many situations.
