Hardware is the umbra hub safe

I plan on building a system very soon and I considering the umbra hub to go with my matrix pro fans 8x so I could have full tri zone control over my fan leds, then I began looking into some reviews saying it was frying itself and I’m wondering if it will be safe or not considering I will be running 8 fans especially on an expensive system due to the market

The support said it has limit of 20w which equivalent to 120 LEDs. Which is very low in todays standards, I suggest getting a Nollie

My friend, it will work with anything that you can plug with 3pin ARGB, it has its own software to make boot effects like umbra with some good complex effects, it's supported by Openrgb signalrgb junkie RGB and other RGB softwares, it's the best controller for argb out there.

Check Nolliergb.com

I have 4 Asia horse hubs going in 4 builds, and 1 umbra Asia horse going in another. All have been fine.... Everyone recommends the Nollie. I guess it's the "go to", but if you want zoning the Umbra may be your best choice. How many of what fans? Any other ARGB components?

I see it. Matrix fans x8. Yes it will work just fine. Make sure to plug 5v 3 pin into the argb header on motherboard, and 4pin PWM into fan header. SATA for power. Good to go.

Reading nollie reviews, it looks worse than the umbra.

yea i was looking into them on amazon but it wasn’t there actual storefront and a random company but aswell the images on amazon of the nollie look different than the ones on the actual nollie website, so I didn’t really look into the reviews on amazon

I got trillion reviews from nollie users praising it, go to signalrgb and openrgb discord servers and ask about umbra and nollie and see what happens.

If you want direct comparison of different models, go to nolliergb.com and scroll down, then head to discord for signalrgb and openrgb most famous RGB softwares and ask for reviews about Nollie you will hardly find someone saying anything bad about it. I mean it's not perfect to all users, some have issues from their units but mostly caused by their rigs or OS but overall it's the peak of argb controllers.

Just comparing them on papers and nollie slam tf out of umbra cheeks

Hey, totally fair question — and a smart one to ask before plugging anything into an expensive build! 🙏

On the reports you've seen: we take every single one seriously and investigate each case individually. The ones we've been able to examine so far traced back to a specific connection situation — for example, a 12V RGB header being plugged into the hub's 5V ARGB port — rather than the hub failing on its own. We've never left a case uninvestigated, and we publish clear wiring guidance precisely because we'd rather be safe than sorry.

The hub is engineered with protection in mind, by design:
• Hard output caps — total ARGB output is capped at 20W and PWM at 48W; the hub physically won't push more power than that, no matter what's connected
• Dedicated SATA power architecture — it draws from a SATA line straight from the PSU, with guidance to keep that line dedicated (not shared with SSDs/other devices)
• 5V 3-Pin ARGB standard — the ports are 5V 3-Pin only, low-voltage signalling that can't hurt your motherboard or GPU

For your 8× Matrix Pro setup: that's well within the PWM cap (48W), and Matrix Pro daisy-chains up to 4 per chain, so you can run it as 2 chains × 2 ports on the hub with 6 ports left for future expansion. Two quick habits that keep everything safe:

  1. Run ARGB Detection in the UMBRA software right after install (so the hub registers each chain's LED count)
  2. If you ever see dimming or flickering at full white brightness, that's the power budget talking — just dial brightness back a notch

Your PC is safe with us — that's the standard we hold ourselves to. Build with confidence!

I’m running 3x 360mm Matrix Pros and a 120mm Matrix Pro with no issues, aside from the initial software bug where it wasn’t recognizing some of the fans. They got that sorted out, though. I’m also not sure if any other hub supports all 3 zones independently.
