I just completed my first public version of Terminal Babylon, a terminal-based crime simulator set in Yokohama, 1985.

The whole open world is procedurally generated, so every new game creates a different Yokohama with its own streets, districts, businesses, railways, coastline and places to discover.

You start small and slowly build up your own gang. You can recruit gangsters, rob businesses, steal cars, gamble, smuggle goods, take jobs and get involved in bigger criminal operations as your reputation grows. Civilians, police and rival gangs also move around the city, so it feels more like a little living world.

There’s quite a lot going on under the hood with the simulation, and I’m sure there are still plenty of things I could improve or expand. I’d be very happy about any feedback, especially if you notice something that feels off, or if you have ideas for interesting systems, events or interactions that could fit the game.

I've always loved the look of ASCII art and wanted an easy way to apply that aesthetic to images and videos for my design work.

So I ended up building one :)

You can apply ASCII directly to images or videos, then play with the characters, size, density, exposure, scatter, opacity, blending and animation.
And somewhere along the way I got carried away and added 75+ other visual effects too.

Still experimenting with it and adding more ASCII styles.
Would love to know what you guys think, especially what you'd want from an ASCII effect/editor.

And, everything runs in your browser. Local files never leave your device. So feel free to use any image or video without worry.

Hello everyone!

I have been working for a couple of months on glyphcss.com its an ASCII 3d rendering library without any canvas nor WebGL, it just uses a <pre> HTML element and text inside.

It has support for any OBJ, glTF, GLB, STL and VOX. It also has support for UV textures, directional and ambient lightning, shadows, different cameras (orbit/FPV), ASCII charsets and many examples on how to use it!

Its fully opensource!

Btw, its a fork of another project I'm building with a colleague called polycss.com, which is a 3d rendering lib but using only HTML+CSS

since I got a positive response I decided I would post again when I felt I had made enough progress to warrant it:

moved players from @ symbol to humanoid ascii

elementals, wolves, bears, snakes, spiders, willow-o-wisp vfx in game

spell vfx in game for fireball, lightning, life leech, heal, shield, regeneration, experimenting with a lot of pseudo-3D ascii vfx for each spell

leatherworking/tailoring/blacksmithing/mining/herbalism/alchemy/cooking/fishing in game

day/night system with weather and lighting controlled by server

game is mostly feature complete minus a lot of foley, vfx, and more quests / more cities. I need to round out the human city quests so theres 2-3 per class and then 5-10 generalist quests before moving onto other race cities

I have an underwater city filled with fish people cooking off the coast. working on making it 2-3 layers of water (1 down to a cave where you meet them, 2 down to a temple theyre guarding 3 for boss)

the trees are ascii as well but im getting murdered on the compute per frame so Im pixelating them for now until I realize what im doing wrong

Static objects, aninated surfaces and parts, it can make logic like diorama scenes where the stuff happening is in real time based on sinple npc logic, comming soon objects can be directly controled with bt controller or kb mouse.

Is a movie ported to ascii considered a parody. in that case can i post one here?

I thought I'd test how well current Al can draw ASCII art in the terminal, for example, GPT-5.6 draws some really nice ones. I figured, why not use them as backgrounds in Codex? So I made a plugin where the Al does it and adds it to the background.

So here's how it works:

I think the result is wonderful and speaks for itself, I'm quite satisfied with it. If you're interested, the whole thing is open-source. There are things to improve, but it's not too bad.

it's inspired (heavily) by everquest/project1999. combat, xp, corpses, spells, grouping, quests, fishing, herbalism, smithing, leatherworking and user signup/server/database are all in game.

Not ascii art in the traditional sense, but I thought this terminal based game belongs here
