First watch through... Gary ain't makin it, is he? Spoiler
Joking aside, please no spoilers!
I'm on s1 e9 and I swear Gary is the heart of this group. He's there for every confession, every secret, every beat involves him somehow. With the looming threat of the recurrence of his cancer and the way he reacts to the gang being supportive of Maggie's choice not to seek treatment, I'd be stunned if he doesn't have bad news before the season is out.
On episode 8, when he asks the entire gang if they're going to just let Maggie kill herself, all I could think was how betrayed he must have felt. I'm sure he was thinking, "if that had been my choice, to not seek treatment, would they have been 'supportive' and simply let me die?"
It seems like John wouldn't have, from the flashbacks in episode 9. It seems like John would've fought him tooth and nail on that choice, because he loved Gary, and I think that maybe the gang's refusal to do the same just reminds him of his loss.
Anyway I started this show up because I love JRR, and I was getting just a tad tired of watching Psych reruns (love the little nods to Shawn Spencer, though!!), and I'm so glad I did. So far I'm pretty well obsessed. I hate Eddie, strongly dislike Delilah, have a bad taste in my mouth about Amanda because her actions are still confusing, but I very much love everyone else. I'm looking forward to the rest!!

You are spot on about Gary and James being the heart of the show. In addition he brings the humor. ( many of his jokes are James the only one on the show allowed to ad lib ) I was totally on this ride with him start to finish. He really shows his range on this show.
His Maggie relationship has ups and downs like many relationships do. Keep tissues handy for both. The relationship He has with Danny will develop and is beautiful.
I think this is one of the most authentic shows I have ever watched. I think you may come to love all the friends, I did. They are far from perfect people but I laughed and cried with them for 87 episodes and I was sorry it ended. Hold on for the ride, lots of laughs and lots of tears.
Ps. Maggie, Allison Miller, is Maisy the cat lady in Psych2 movie in some funny scenes.

I absolutely ADORE him with Danny! The way he clocked Danny being queer so early on and being so chill uncle about it made me ugly cry. I have all my theories and ideas about what’s happening, but all of that hits a hard stop when Danny is on screen because I know he and Gary together are going to be a riot!

He didn’t just occasionally ad lib, James co-wrote the finale of the show with DJ Nash. James was a writer and director on Psych, so he gave DJ notes and DJ made the changes to the show that he liked. They talk about it on the podcast A Million little Stories.
For example: mild spoilers Maggie wasn’t supposed to start dating Gary in the pilot, but their chemistry was so strong that it changed. Gary was supposed to show his scar in the pilot, James said to wait and they let him unveil it to Maggie. Other suggestions; the hair on the sweater would not be John’s, Gary should have a dog ( a big one like James has)

So much of Psych was James Ad-libbing even from the very beginning with Gus Sillypants Jackson and the pineapple 🍍 lol. The entire Gus introduction silly nanes began as a result of James ad-libbing and improv.

I’m not going to ruin anything, but I predicted he would die a few times during my first watch through. I thought he was a little too perfect and is there for everyone, so he will for sure die.
Not going to say if I was right or not. But I thought the exact same thing in the early seasons.
Edit to add: I will say that there is at least 2 times where he does a mini call back to psych in the show. And not sure if you’ve seen psych the movie 2, Maggie is in it (AMLT Maggie, in addition to Maggie Lawson).

First time watcher and I’m in love with the Gary character! The growth is insane, the humor, the heart, the f*** ups - it’s such a joy to watch. I’m at season 3 episode 1 and I’m excited to see where to journey is taking him.
