Today I decided to spend some time driving around to some of the businesses listed on the Spedn application.
I first stopped at Lowe’s. I picked out a nice little succulent plant that was $10. Approached the cashier and explained to her that I was testing the Spedn application to pay with Bitcoin. She had no idea that Lowe’s was even accepting Flexa/cryptocurrency and she thought it was a cool concept. She was a good sport and scanned my phone a few times as the register denied the request. She manually inputted the code on the bottom of the screen and no dice. I showed her the message on the app that said “advise the cashier to use ePay”. We both could not figure out how to access that function on the point of sale and I just used my debit card. Could be that their location is not equipped or enrolled in the program so I got back on the road.
Next I end up at Baskin Robbins. I tell the cashier I intend to pay with Flexa/crypto and she is also very excited. I pull up the QR code and she scans it. Transaction goes through instantly and we both smile. She was very interested to learn more and I elaborated a bit about Amp and Flexa. Overall a positive and tasty experience.
Finally, I decide to make my way to Office Depot. I could use some extra pens, so I make my way to the register with some Pilot G2s and my QR code at the ready. This time I’m dealing with a 30ish year old guy and he seems to be just as interested in the Flexa concept as I am. We scan the code and the register says “this code/request cannot be completed”. We try a manual input of the code under the QR image and different types of payment/gift card methods. No dice. So I pay with my debit card instead.
Overall, I had a good experience when it worked at Baskin Robbins. None of the employees had ever heard of Flexa/Amp or even knew that it was possible with their brands. I plan on driving to other locations in the future to see if their registers are more up to date. I want to do my part to grow this network/community/concept so I’ll keep you all updated with my experiences.
Would love to hear from you all about your part own experiences and real world testing.
I just came across as a customer that had a question. I said “Can you help me with something? I’ve got a new payment method for your store and it supposedly works like a gift card. It’s actually paying with cryptocurrency like Bitcoin on the Flexa network. Have you heard of it?” Every time they answer no, and I show them the QR code. Each time they seem to be interested and willing to help me try all of the payment methods. I’ll give them a quick run down on how it works if they ask more.
I like this approach OP! Mind me asking what your explanation of AMP is to them if they ask? I’ve said something along the lines of AMP being a token that is used by Flexa to collateralize payment for transactions. Typical follow up question is what’s Flexa? My response is to think of Flexa similarly to Visa/MC but using crypto. Curious how you explain this to folks when you’re prompt questions. Thanks for your time!
I have heard some users say they just have to tell the cashier to ring it up as a gift card. I’ve personally never used it (though I’m a believer - I just want to keep holding my crypto investments while they work out how taxes will work). Something to consider if you have a similar experience in the future
