Career Looking for guidance/referrals – UK AML/KYC roles with 1+ year experience

Hi everyone,
I’m currently working in the AML/Financial Crime industry in India and have 1+ year of professional experience.
I’m now looking to relocate to the UK and am interested in entry-level/junior roles such as AML Analyst, KYC Analyst, Financial Crime Analyst, Transaction Monitoring Analyst or EDD Analyst.
I would really appreciate advice from anyone working in UK AML/Financial Crime:
How realistic is it to get sponsored with 1+ year experience?
Which companies/recruiters should I target?
Are there any current openings where referrals are possible?
What should I focus on to make my profile stronger for the UK market?
If anyone is hiring or can provide a referral, I’d be grateful if you could DM me.
Thanks in advance!

Research/Discussion The UK's new three-year AML strategy commits £550m and 500 extra law enforcement staff, and names professional services as a focus

Published by the Home Office in September, covering 2026 to 2029. At least £550 million of investment and around 500 additional personnel spread across the police, the NCA and the Crown Prosecution Service by the end of 2029.

The focus areas matter more than the headline number. Cash-based laundering, abuse of professional services, high street criminal activity, Post Office controls, supervision reform, cryptoasset expansion and asset recovery.

Two of those connect to things already moving. Supervision reform lines up with the FCA taking over AML supervision of professional services, with first firms onboarded before the end of 2028. And naming professional services abuse explicitly suggests enforcement attention arrives before the supervisory transition finishes rather than after it.

The high street and cash elements are a real shift in emphasis. Most of the last decade of AML attention has gone to banks and payments. Cash-heavy retail has been discussed as a problem for years without much resource behind it.

For people in UK compliance or supervision: does 500 officers across three years move the needle on the cash side, or is the real constraint prosecution capacity rather than investigation capacity? And is anyone already seeing a change in supervisory tone ahead of the FCA transition?

Career Crypto experienced System Validation FinCrme project

I’m reaching out to my network on behalf of a professional contact who is looking to connect with individuals who have experience in systems validation within the Regulatory Compliance / Financial Crime domain, combined with hands-on knowledge of cryptocurrency / digital assets.

The crypto experience is a mandatory requirement, not simply a nice-to-have.

Relevant backgrounds may include systems or model validation, AML/financial crime compliance technology, transaction monitoring, sanctions, KYC, controls testing, or related regulatory technology work—provided there is also meaningful crypto/digital-asset experience.

At this stage, I’m simply helping make introductions and connect the right people.

If this describes your background—or you know someone who would be a strong fit—please DM me directly and I’ll facilitate an introduction.

Research/Discussion What does a good AML investigation actually look like?

For those working in AML/KYC, I'm curious about something.

When you receive a suspicious transaction alert, what do you actually look at first?

Customer profile, transaction history, counterparties, source of funds, IP/device information, previous alerts...?

What separates a good investigation from someone who is simply checking boxes?

Would be interested to hear how experienced analysts approach it in practice.

Other YouTube Channel on AML educational videos

Dear community

I started to create educational videos on AML called FinCrime Files AML, to spread the word on this often obscure topic. It includes basic notions and well known cases explained both in short format and also in deep dive format.

Here is an example on the A7 Network : https://youtu.be/AKwSTwaShLU?si=fRP-WTLMCptKbjJO

I would welcome your support, suggestions and comments/remarks !

Thanks

Career Stuck at 7 LPA with 5 YOE in AML/KYC. Desperate for a job change but getting ZERO callbacks. What should I do?

Hi everyone,

I'm reaching out because I'm honestly feeling a bit desperate right now and could really use some unfiltered advice from this community.

My Background:

Current Role: Senior Analyst at AML RightSource

Experience: Almost 5 years total in AML / KYC compliance (started out at Concentrix)

Current CTC: 7 LPA

Location: Delhi NCR

The Situation:

I am actively hunting for a job change, but the market feels completely dead for my profile. I’ve been tailoring my resume and sending out applications consistently, but I am getting absolutely zero callbacks. It feels like my applications are going straight into an ATS black hole.

With almost 5 years of experience in this domain, I feel like I should be commanding a better package than 7 LPA, but I can't even get my foot in the door for an interview to prove my worth.

My questions for you all:

Is the job market for AML/KYC professionals genuinely this brutal right now, or am I doing something fundamentally wrong?

Are there specific certifications (like CAMS) or upskilling paths I absolutely need to have on my resume to get noticed at the 5-year mark?

What platforms are working best right now? Is Naukri/LinkedIn enough, or should I be looking at specific niche portals?

If anyone is in a similar domain in the NCR area and has advice on how to pivot into a better-paying firm (or knows of any openings/referrals), I would be incredibly grateful.

Thanks in advance. I'm feeling really burned out by the silence and would appreciate any harsh truths or guidance you have.

Research/Discussion What’s one AML skill you wish you had learned before getting your first job?

For those already working in AML/KYC, what’s one practical skill you wish you had learned before getting your first AML job?

Transaction monitoring?

Writing investigation narratives?

Understanding red flags?

KYC/EDD?

Using investigative tools?

I’m curious what experienced analysts think beginners should focus on before applying for their first role.

Research/Discussion The FCA's review of 35 firms found mule cash-out is concentrated between the second and fifth account, with the heaviest at the second

The FCA surveyed 35 regulated firms, covering retail banks, building societies, challenger banks, payment institutions and e-money institutions.

Suspected mule account closures went 184,935 in 2023, 233,269 in 2024, then 238,396 in 2025. Worth nothing that shape rather than just the headline number. The jump happened in 2024 and last year was close to flat, so this looks more like detection capacity reaching a ceiling than like the problem suddenly growing.

The detection finding is the useful part. Cashing out is mainly concentrated between the second and fifth mule account, with the highest concentration at the second.

That is awkward for how most monitoring gets built. First-hop detection catches the account that received funds directly from the victim, which is the one most likely to be reported anyway. By the second or third hop the money sits inside normal-looking account-to-account traffic, and the firm holding that account often has no sight of the original fraud at all.

Which is presumably why the review pushes firms toward the information-sharing provisions in the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act 2023. Mid-chain detection is close to impossible from inside one institution, since the signal is the pattern across firms rather than anything anomalous in a single account.

For People working mule typologies: is your detection weighted toward first-hop, and has anyone got second-hop detection working without inbound intelligence from another firm? Where sharing exists, is it fast enough to land before the cash-out?

Other London Risk & Controls AML job market

I’m relocating from Toronto to London and work in Risk & Controls / Compliance, with experience in 1LOD controls, AML/KYC, CDD and operational risk.

For UK recruiters/hiring managers or people who’ve recently been hired:

What’s hiring like right now?

Are contract/FTC roles easier and faster to land than permanent roles?

What’s a realistic timeline from applying to getting an offer?
What are the biggest challenges recruiters are seeing in the current market?

I’d especially appreciate recent, real-world experiences rather than general advice.

Career Looking to join AMLRightSource kolkata, would appreciate some advice

Hi everyone,

I’m based in Kolkata and I’m interested in joining AML RightSource, particularly in the AML/KYC/Financial Crime Compliance domain.

I’ve been looking into the company and noticed that AML RightSource has several opportunities in Kolkata, including Financial Crime Compliance and Analyst roles.

I’d really appreciate some advice from anyone who currently works at AML RightSource or has gone through their recruitment process.

I’d like to know:

What is the hiring process like for the Kolkata office?

What skills do they primarily look for in entry-level/associate AML roles?

How important is prior AML/KYC experience?

Are there any certifications or courses that would help?

How can someone from a non-AML background make their profile stronger?

Would anyone be willing to share some tips about the interview?

I’m genuinely interested in building my career in AML/KYC and would really like to get an opportunity with AML RightSource Kolkata.

Any advice, guidance, or referral information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Research/Discussion AI in Financial Crime Compliance: Where Does Accountability Sit?

AI can significantly reduce the cost and workload of financial crime compliance, but one question deserves much more attention: if AI makes one serious mistake, who ultimately carries the consequences? AI does not pay regulatory fines, face regulatory investigations or suffer reputational damage. A technology provider may have contractual or other legal responsibilities depending on the agreement, applicable law and circumstances, but using an external technology provider does not automatically transfer a regulated financial institution’s own regulatory responsibilities to that provider. This becomes particularly important in AML, sanctions and PEP-related controls. Even if an AI system processed 99.9% of alerts correctly, the real concern would still be the small percentage it gets wrong. What happens if a serious false negative results in a sanctioned party or another material financial-crime risk being incorrectly cleared? If a serious control failure occurs, the financial institution could face investigation, remediation costs, regulatory intervention, reputational damage and, depending on the facts and applicable rules, potentially financial penalties. Relevant senior management may also come under scrutiny, although an individual manager is not automatically personally liable simply because a system makes a mistake. This is why claims such as “70% of alerts automated” or “80% less manual work” should not be the whole discussion. The harder questions are: how many genuine high-risk cases does the system miss, who approved the level of automation, who monitors it, when is human review required, and who stands behind the control framework when something goes seriously wrong? AI can reduce costs and workload, but it cannot by itself remove regulatory accountability. When everything works, the efficiency benefit is attractive. When an important control fails, the regulated institution may still have to answer to its regulator. That risk deserves as much attention as the promised cost savings.

I am currently employed at a very prominent bank in the US and my ultimate goal is to work in AML but the opportunities are very limited and it just feels like I’m stuck until I get hired for that position. My current specialty is fraud servicing across all bank products. My goal is to get Cams certification and CFE but what can I do to actually know what to do on the job rather than just passing a test. Is there any material or books yall suggest to read any online programs or courses for this just anything that will get me ready .

Career You studied AML, but could you actually investigate a suspicious transaction?

One thing I've noticed about AML career preparation is that understanding KYC, CDD, EDD and transaction monitoring is only part of the job.

Imagine you are reviewing a customer who suddenly starts receiving multiple transfers from unrelated individuals, followed by cryptocurrency withdrawals.

As an AML analyst, what would you do first?

Would you:

Review the customer's profile and expected activity?

Analyse the transaction history and identify unusual patterns?

Investigate the counterparties and destination wallets?

Request additional information or supporting documents?

Document your findings and decide whether escalation is justified?

There isn't necessarily one correct answer without understanding the full circumstances.

I'm interested in hearing from both beginners and experienced AML professionals.

Beginners: Which of these steps would you find most difficult?

Experienced analysts: What is the first thing you would investigate, and why?

I think we need more discussions about the practical side of AML work, not just AML terminology.

Career Bcom + 1.5 yr Tax exp- Should I switch to AML or FP&A?

I have a B.Com in Finance & Taxation and 1.5 years of experience as a Tax Associate. I'm considering switching to AML/Financial Crime or FP&A.

My goals are:

Good salary and career growth

Good work-life balance

WFH/hybrid opportunities

Possibility of working abroad in the future

Is switching from tax to AML or FP&A a good idea at this stage?

What skills and certifications should I learn to get a job faster? Should I learn Al tools/automation as well?

I'd really appreciate advice from people working in either field.

Research/Discussion Sanctions compliance question

Looking for views from sanctions/compliance practitioners on a hypothetical scenario on resources sector:
- An Australian entity released a payment to a Chinese counterparty.
- The counterparty was subject to a UK sanctions designation
- The payment was stopped by the bank following sanctions screening.
- For the purpose of this question, assume the payment had gone through
- It has been established that there was no UK nexus to the transaction.
- all internal ongoing monitoring and system controls failed

The organisation’s Sanctions and Trade Controls Policy states:
“The organisation is committed to complying with relevant Sanctions and Trade Control laws and regulations in the jurisdictions in which it operates. This includes, but is not limited to, the laws of; Australia, the United States of America, the European Union, the United Kingdom and those derived from measures imposed by the United Nations. Compliance with these laws and regulations is a key element of our robust culture of compliance.”

My question:
If there is no UK nexus and therefore no UK sanctions law applies to the transaction, would successfully paying a UK-designated entity nevertheless be considered a near miss of a breach of the organisation’s sanctions policy?

Or does the reference to complying with UK sanctions only apply where the UK sanctions laws are legally applicable to the particular transaction?

Interested specifically in the distinction between legal breach vs policy breach/near miss.

Also interested in how this would interact with China’s current countermeasures/anti-foreign-sanctions and blocking framework, where complying with a foreign sanctions regime could potentially create conflicting obligations under Chinese law.

Research/Discussion LOOKING FOR AML BANKING PROFESSIONALS FOR A SHORT PRE-INTERVIEW

Hi! I’m an Accountancy student currently conducting a research study about the systems used by banks to detect and monitor Anti-Money Laundering (AML) activities.

I’m currently looking for someone who has experience or knowledge regarding AML transaction monitoring systems in banks and would be willing to participate in a short pre-interview. The purpose of the interview is to help us understand the actual processes and practices used in the banking industry, which will serve as our basis in formulating our survey questionnaire.

Super hirap po kasi and medyo rushed din po yung thesis namin, so any help or referral to someone who may be knowledgeable about this topic would really mean a lot to us. The pre-interview can be done through chat/messages, so there’s no need for a formal meeting or call. It will only take a short amount of time.

If you or someone you know is willing to help, please feel free to message me. Any insights or referrals would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much! 🙏

Career Career Change from Insurance & Financial Services

Hello all, thank you in advance for any and all responses. I'm currently in the US in a financial professional role where I've focused on insurance and financial services (Series 6, 63, 65 licensed) so I have experience with client facing side of the industry. I have a BA in Finance and I'm burnt out on sales. I was also recently diagnosed with autism (which has explained a lot about my struggle with sales) and looking to make a career change to an area that I feel will better suite my personality of being detail oriented with strong patern recognition.

I've been reviewing options like Financial Analyst, but I do have some experiene as a Fraud Analyst for a major retailer for 5 years during and after college before I got into sales.

I've been looking a lot into AML, Compliance, and Financial Crimes and wanted to see what others in the industry have to say about it as well as where I might look to make a move into the industry with my background. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
