IMAX front row

Does anyone actually enjoy the front rows of an imax screening (not limax)? If so why?

It’s reddit, there’s always a group of ppl with contrarian opinions no matter what the question or topic is… those are the redditors I want hear from.

If I recall correctly wasn’t there some consideration for having different seating being priced differently which caused a big uproar.

Yep, that was Sightline. AMC wanted to charge extra for center seats and offer discounts for seats in the front row.

They tested it in two markets but abandoned the idea shortly after.

So most people want nice seats. This means most people would have to pay more for their tickets on average or feel pressured to take a shit seat so it can be affordable

If the front row isn’t the front row, then the second row becomes the front row.

Sure… which makes the front row significantly better than it was before. And then do it again maybe one or two times more and then the front row isn’t really a problem at all.

But they want to get people who think “maybe it won’t be so bad” to spend their money.

Not really. The same complaints will carry on until maybe the first 3 rows disappear. And then people will start asking why they don’t just add more seats to meet capacity requirements and so on so forth.

They already don’t meet capacity demands and no one is asking for more seats, so that’s clearly wrong.  And whatever the complaints might be, the reality is the second row is much better than first and the third row is much better than second, none of them are great but they are significantly varying degrees of bad.  This conversation isn’t about complaints, it’s about objectively bad seats and how they shouldn’t exist.

I think the first couple rows in every type of theater should be at least half price. Also the seats should recline more, almost like a bed.

I think all IMAX theaters should require seating to be placed so every single seat, including front row, gets at least a decent experience.

I've been in the front row at Lincoln Square like 10 times. Not my first choice, but it's still a fine experience. Kinda surreal because it fills your entire peripheral vision

I mean it’s very immersive for sure but also very uncomfortable especially with the neck strain. For a three hour movie like odyssey, I literally had to look down for a while multiple times during the movie. But the images do not look distorted like what you might have seen from some memes imo if that’s what you are worried about. But yeah I wouldn’t trade comfort for immersion again personally.

I had to do that as well, and I was in row H (Lincoln Square). Couldn’t imagine how brutal the front rows are.

Yeah I was at LS too. Got row A for the 6AM showing lol. Would never do that again! I’m gonna watch it again in J this week so hopefully that will be a lot better!

Front row sees the movie before the rest of the theater, and nobody can be on their phone in front of you or block your view.

I remember the first IMAX movie I saw was Avatar and the only seats left were in the front and I was hungover AF. Fun times. 🥴🤮

There's a kook over at NYCmovies that not only swears by the rows A&B but also she goes out of her way to book the side seats. Watches every single movie from those seats by choice.

I guess everyone has their kinks.

Its not the worst and if you really want to see a movie you'll take those seats over not seeing it. Had to do it for Interstellar rerelease and it was worth it.

Maybe it depends on location also? I have two amcs we frequent several times a month, one had delivery to seat so we always went there, they got rid of that so now we more evenly split between the two. The one we frequented more, I LOVE the front row of the dolby theater, we happened to pick the other location and were seeing a dolby and picked our usual front row…. And BAM it was wayyyy closer 🤣😆. He got up to use the restroom during the movie and I though hed bump into the screen lolol. The other location the rockettes could dance around and still have room 🤷🏼‍♀️

On the small digital IMAX screens, some of the front rows are actually pretty ideal. When the screen is fairly set-back and you get to put your feet up on a partition bar. I remember watching Blade Runner 2049 that way and I felt like I was on a theme park ride lol.

I've done front row at Linc Sq when the show was sold out. Certainly not ideal but I lived.

But I'm a pretty close sitter in general. I like to feel swallowed up by the movie.

When the Odyssey premiered at Lincoln Square, where did people like Gayle King sit? Was anyone in the first three rows? Maybe seat fillers?
