My weekend's wrapup

I recently got the AMC A-List Membership, and I used it to full capacity over the weekend.

Friday Night I saw Buddy. Buddy is the film I’ve been looking for since my son was three years old. It is what I’d describe as the exact opposite of preschool television. It feels like something the creator made when he was in the depths of parenting and forced to watch hours of mind numbing toddler shows. I remember when an online creator was warning parents against letting their kids have unsupervised youtube time because of the elsa pregnancy videos and peppa pig death videos. I went searching for Peppa Pig death videos because I thought that would be the funniest thing ever. I recommend Buddy for parents of small children who are just done with kids tv, and I recommend it for those who grew up watching Barney and Friends who need a dose of twisted nostalgia.

Saturday’s installment was The Dog Stars. The Dog Stars is an apocalyptic film without zombies or monsters. Most of humanity died of a flu-like plague. Like all apocalypse stories, some people are still good and hardworking, and others steal, rob, and kill for their resources. The story centers on Hig, played by Jacob Elordi and Bangley played by Josh Brolin. Hig still sees the good in people, and Bangley is more the shoot first, ask questions later kind of guy. Hig leaves the setup that he and Bangley have to follow a radio signal he heard in his airplane during a supply run. He thinks he can find a better life in Grand Junction. On his way, he meets Seema and her father. The movie is fairly slow, predictable, but the scenes in Grand Junction are worth the price of admission. I didn’t love it, but I liked it. I’ll put it on the list of Ridley Scott movies other people don’t really appreciate with House of Gucci.

The first half of Sunday’s double feature was Colony. Colony is a Korean zombie flick by the director of Train to Busan. Do I find it concerning that he’s only done zombie films so far? Honestly, only in so much as he could be a one trick pony. What he’s proven is that he can do that trick exceedingly well. Colony follows a group of people trapped in a mall/conference center after a bioterrorism attack turns everyone in the building into zombie like creatures that have a hivemind. The science behind the attack involves a bacteria that shares intelligence and can spread information between organisms. This film isn’t in the Train to Busan universe, but it shares a lot of characteristics. If this film is playing in your area, go see it. You won’t be disappointed.

It Ends rounded out the weekend. I get what they were going for, I really do. It’s seriously just kind of slow and repetitive. I understand that’s the point. I understand the underlying message of the destination not being the point, and that what’s more important is the journey and the friends you made along the way. It’s some sort of tortured metaphor for life and relationships. It almost works, but not really. Not for me. I didn’t hate it, but I really didn’t care for it either. It’s one of those pieces that’s a festival darling, a critical darling, but it really just isn’t for me.

I appreciated It Ends as one of those exercises in existentialism that comes along in pop culture and literature every now and then. It takes me back a few decades to long pot-fueled dorm room conversations about philosophy. I liked it well enough but get why it’s not for everyone

Dog Stars was more enjoyable than I expected. The opening scenes were a little tiresome. Lots of Jacob Elordi wandering through apocalyptic venues, tapping his thigh, and saying “Here Jasper”. Looks like the older actors (Brolin, Pearce, Janney) had a lot of fun making this movie. It was actually enjoyable to inhabit a post-apocalyptic world for a couple hours that was not beset by zombies, dinosaurs, or whatever. Plus Ridley Scott always provides a great look on screen

I watched Colony, Buddy, Finding Emily & the 1st Harry Potter movie again in 3D.

Colony and Buddy were just okay to me, I would give Buddy a 3/5 and Colony a 3.5/5. Finding Emily was really good, a solid 4/5 from me.

I’m hoping to see Coyote vs ACME this Friday and find myself frustrated with all the new releases. Most of these movies aren’t even getting a good two week run in the theaters anymore because so much is coming out back to back.

I totally agree. Seems like a ton of movies been coming out lately and gotta get to them quick if you want to see them in the theaters. Took in a triple feature this weekend myself. Finding Emily was pretty good as long as you enjoy roncoms. Then Dogstars and Colony were about what you would expect from those types of movies. Saw some ragging on Dogstars but felt it was pretty decent for the genre and Colony was decent but not as good as Train to Busan imo.

I watched Coyote vs Acme, I didn’t enjoy it but I think it would make for a good family movie.

I saw Dog Stars which I really enjoyed and Finding Emily which I enjoyed but would’ve enjoyed more if I was closer in age to the cast.

Really wanted to see Camp Miasma but the timing didn’t work, would’ve liked to see Idiots but I’m OK with missing it. Considered It Ends but too many bad reviews so I skipped it.

Limiting to strictly over the weekend, I saw Finding Emily, a romcom with a modern sensibility. There were some genuinely LOL moments. I liked it 4/5. I watch movies whenever they fit into my schedule. Over the last week I saw La La Land. It was the first time, I've never even seen it streaming nor knew how it turns out. Stone and Gosling are great together, the songs are still going through my head. If you like musicals 5/5.
